    NAD! Dr. Z Cure

I went into a music store to check out the Mesa Fillmore 25 and 50 to see if I'd consider selling a couple of amps to cover the cost. The 25 sounded good and was very portable. The 50 sounded even better but wasn't as portable.

Then I tried this! A Dr. Z Cure. It's only 15 watts, but I think it's louder than the Fillmore 25. It's got a Fender tweed crossed with Vox and Marshall and sounds awesome with a Telecaster and makes my Strat's bridge pickup sound fat. It's a more basic amp than the Mesas and is very responsive to touch. It's got a foot pedal to bypass the tone stack and increase the gain. The Master and Level control can bring the volume down to home levels with good tone. It weighs 33 pounds.

6V6's, think of it as a blackface with a master volume. I think they're still made int he USA.

    Mike stands behind his stuff.

2x6V6, 2x12AX7, 1x12AT7 and a 5AR4. 1x12" speaker. The Master is a pre-phase inverter master, the Level is a post-phase inverter master. Set the texture of the gain with the Volume and the Master and set how loud it is with the Level. It sounds very good at low levels and awesome cranked. Probably the most flexible amp I've played in that respect.

The foot switch to bypass the tone stack has a potentiometer on it so you can set how much you're bypassing the tone stack. It can go from unity, to adding a little mids, to getting very loud.
I have read that the tone stack is like a low power tweed Twin. I think the idea behind the amp is a brownface to blackface type amp. I sounds better cranked than any blackface Fender I've played and the tone stack bypass makes it sound tweed-like.

I tried it with some pedals last night. Reverb in the FX loop was great. Tremolo in the loop wasn't- it added distortion. Drive pedals in front of the amp are great! It loves fuzz!

I like my amp to always be just a little bit dirty sounding and this amp is inspiring to play.

    It's 19-1/4" x 19-1/2' x 10-1/2" and, as I mentioned, 33 pounds. Very portable. I could take it anywhere.

It was expensive- not by hand built in USA amp standards, but was expensive by my standards.

There's a pic of what they look like inside in this magazine review of the amp-

Does GC carry Dr. Z? I bought this at a small local shop. One of only 2 Dr. Z dealers in Massachusetts listed on their site.

I bought this at Ray Mullin Music in Swansea, MA. They have Nash there as well. In fact, I played a Nash Tele style guitar through this amp and it sealed the deal. The nice thing is that my USACG T-Style is even better than the Nash.

I just played a rehearsal with this amp and it was great! It was more than loud enough. Great volume control, in fact. It sounded great with my pedals and the tone stack bypass foot switch is great!
