    My Uke

I checked and the measurements of my uke make it a concert uke. It's a strange one, a lefty steel string uke. I have searched often for strings, but with no luck. So I found out which guitar string gauges to use. This afternoon, I'll try to get those strings changed. Like Old Ranger, I'm pretty excited about learning more on the uke.

Ukes are a lot of fun.

It's easy to smile when you are annoying the 4 stringers.

    Take care, stay well brother.
I have decided to be happy because it's good for my health.

    Re: My Uke

As a newcomer to the Ukulele, I cannot deny nor confirm the use of steel strings on these instruments. Now as an old luthier, I would not place steel strings on one. There is no trussrod present. The string tension to obtain the proper pitch would create an enormous amount of strain on the instrument. And I suggest to inspect the bridge. If it is like a classical, with no string pegs, and the strings are poked through the bridge with the ballends holding things, I would not continue to use steel strings. Rather, for the sake of the instrument, I'd persue the use of nylon over steel. Just my opinion, it's your instrument and naturally, yours to do as you choose.

Back where I come from a ukulele with steel strings is called a mandolin.

    Re: My Uke

When my kids were small, they gave it to me for my birthday. We lived in Germany, and they got it off the German eBay. It sounds great. I’m going to put the new strings on when I get home next week. I assure you, Herr Chuck, it is no mandolin. It is a weird thing to have though.
