    Greta van Fleet on SNL

I just read several reviews on Greta van Fleet's performance on SNL, some of them complaining about the sound.

Well, I like them. The SNL gig might not have been their best but they do deliver some good old rock and roll, and yes, they do it Zep style...

    A pretty good performance:

Worth watching. Makes me feel good about modern music

They’re really good. In a few years they might develop into greatness—they’re young and talented.

I am so isolated here, deep in the woods, that I had never heard of them. I no longer watch television, and if I did, SNL would not, repeat, not be on my watchlist. So I guess I would still not have seen them even if I did have TV.

Reckon I'd better get my phone to try the video thing huh?

Guess I'm getting too old. Was not impressed. Didn't sound good to me. Couldn't even determine the gender of the "singer" that mostly screamed. Rather generic guitar work.... Nope, not impressed.

I can understand the fact that you don't like them. You're a VERY fine guitar player and most of all, listener. The kind of guitarist that tries a new electric by playing a classical piece on it. That makes you very demanding, my father is just like that (I'm saying this in a good way).

The main reason I like Greta van Fleet is that they make crude, raw, analog rock and roll, with a screeching, early 70s style vocal and a sloppy (again, in a good way) guitarist, just like Page was back then, even though he was an outstanding studio musician... They kinda bring back the poetry of it all. The genuine vibe.

The young fellow there picks up a faded, road worn 1962 (yes, it's an original, the CEO of Chicago Music Exchange gave it to him personally) Les Paul/SG and makes it rock through an overdriven Marshall amp, behind a slightly out of tune screeching singer... What's more authentic than that these days when autotune and playback rule everything?

I’ve read a few major publications that say GVF are the possible saviors of Rock and roll. I hope so, but that puts a lot of pressure on those guys.

That's quite a lot of hyperbole. Personally, I don't think rock-n-roll needs "saving." All over the world at this very moment, there are budding rock stars cranking away in their bedrooms, basements and garages. It's been this way for eons. Rock never rusts. As the liner notes on one of my Sons of Champlin records reads, "You can't hide good music."

Yes but look at what’s in the top twenty songs chart and albums chart. Compare it with 30-40 years ago and see the ratio of rock and pop rock acts in those charts. Guitar rock specifically.

I agree with you about press hyperbole. Still that notion gets around and becomes expectations. I’m just saying that such stuff puts pressure on the band.

I absolutely ABHOR song charts and "top" anything! But I'm not in the music profession, so I don't have to deal with the pressure of creating "hits."

My belief is that trends come and go. We may be in the doldrums, or we may just be wistful for the music we grew up with, but at some point, some new acts will show up and we'll be back rockin'!

Re: Greta van Fleet on SNL

It is time for that resurgence. I was mostly sick of pop and rock in the early 80s, until Clapton and Gilmour reminded me of how much I loved the guitar.

By the early 90s, rock was at a low. Then grunge and Brit pop, and all of a sudden you had an interest in the guitar again. In Europe, Oasis was so big that Noel Gallagher was responsible for a definite uptick in sales of Epiphone Les Pauls and Casinos. At that time, The Beatles came back in vogue.

I have to agree with OR they are just okay. Someone needs to tell the boys okay cool you know how to sound, act like Zepplin how about something original?..

I can think of a lot better bands with a lot more talent than theses kid's. I live in Michigan so I have known about GVF for 5 years or so I hope they wake up do there own thing.

Wanna see some real talent? Give these bands a listen...

    Got a point there.
Those Ohio boys were tight! Sounded good using basic and solid pentatonics with very direct percussion. Yeah, tight... That's how ya do it.

That van Fleet bunch sounds like a "Fleet Enema" from Holland!
I forgot what I was going to say...
