    Blues Junior

Anyone an expert on the Blues Juniors?
What are the differences from year to year?
    What about limited editions?
In your opinion, what would be THE model/year to get?
What's with all of the Is, and IIs, and IIIs?
What about some saying Hot Rod?
What specific mods would you make in order to have a really killer one?
    Gracias.

The best blues jr. you're going to get is to rip it out and rebuild the chasis into something with some real headroom ala Randall Smith's princeton mods.

Check here if you must have one:

Frankly for me to make the amp usable for the sounds/tones I use I'd be looking at. minimum:
    • move chassis into better cabinet
    • replace speaker with a nice 12" ala g12m-65
    • replace transformers ala the bandmaster mods people do (see Steve Kimock)
    • replace reverb tank with a larger one
    • roll tubes
    • bias them sig. hotter than factory

for that kind of money I'd be looking at a vintage Gibson amp.

it's a fine amp in stock form for grab and go if you don't intend on using it live without a mic.Im not willing to spend my money on "fine". YMMV.

Going vintage, as in the Skylark or Scout?

    yes vintage, absolutely.

with Gibson if you find one locally in good nick it's often 400-500 because people don't want them or don't know what they are. frankly they're all pretty good but I'm a big fan of the 20 especially.

For that size amp I'd also think about an Ampeg Jet if your taste is more to the meaty overdriven sound, or a Champ for a traditional tone.

I guess it really depends on what you intend to use it for.

Bluez Juniors are pretty sweet! You will find them too be a very common weapon in many guitarists arsenals.

I have an issue 2 or 3 with the tweed and many mods.

I did every BillM mod (that didn't overlap) just to push it a bit further, but the base unit is really a decent amp.

Except the speaker. Even on the NOS version.

The extra tiny knobs are "Presence" and "Sparkle" BillM's.

They allow a more Tweedy tone or a more Voxish.

I would suggest finding a used one and replacing the speaker then adding mods as you see fit.

    Google BillM
