    New digs in Cowtown

    Howdy, y'all.

Been settling into the new house recently and thought I'd check in. The office has some curtains that have a vintage vibe to them...makes the gear look pretty groovy.

shriveled, meagre, hopping, though loud and troublesome, insects of the hour."

Hate to break it to ya but that gear looks pretty damned groovy all on it's own!

I do see what you mean though lol.

    Very nice gear indeed!

Congrats on the new digs. And man, you can’t go wrong with the combo of a Strat and a Deluxe. I love my DRRI. My Tele, Strat, and Les Paul just sing through it.

Curtains? What curtains? All I see is a very luscious Strat and a DRRI.

    Methinks that's not a reissue.

...and YOU would be correct, sir!

I've found three guitar-amp combos that are the best for me. Princeton Reverb with Tele, Tweed Super with my Ibanez AF-75 (hollow body jazz box), and a Deluxe Reverb with a Strat!

Part of me wants to do a Vibrolux Reverb or a Tweed Vibrolux when I get the chance to do another build.

Good to hear from y'all again!

That's a tricky one since I don't know that guitar terribly well. I'd have to defer to others with more experience there!

I hope you're not thinking the D word?

I'd like to keep it reasonable, so preferably under 2 grand. Like, way under two grand. That pretty much eliminates most half stacks I guess.

speaking of half stacks, where are all the 200-250 dollar 4x12s that people keep saying are out there? Certainly not surfeit of them made and everybody and their brother bitch about them being too boh coo and no mas and all that. Everybody I see wants 5-6 hundred for mdf jcm800s.

    Thank you!!!

I think the only one that beats the DR is this one:

But the DR like the Strat more for sure. The PR likes the Tele more.

That really depends on where and how you want to use it. There's no single amp that's the best choice for everyone.

DR's sound nice with LP's at stage volumes, in your bedroom you'll be missing all the Les Paul magic though.

For universal amps I'd suggest the Rivera Chubster/Clubster since you get a Marshall Channel and a Fender Channel. Another sweetie is the Classic 30. Both however are open-back combos so neither can get you to the Les Paul ecstasy zone. You know, that point when your LP combines the soaring soprano of a Diva with the bone-shaking force of a Top Fuel dragster. 40 years later is still gives me chills.

    Re: New digs in Cowtown

For the LP: Maybe a Carr Mercury V. It was the flavor of the month for the last few. I suspect a few will be showing up used on Reverb soon. The circuit is certainly heralding the future IMO. There are 2 very important sections on it. A series or parallel front end cascading into a 3 step gain feature and a power section variable from 0 to 4 watts or 16. It does a remarkable job of scaling back to bedroom volumes without losing it all. And though it uses 6V6's it sounds more like a Marshall than many Marshalls. I am not partial to Marshalls but it is still the most interesting amp to come out in the last year. With some tweaking it does a passable Fender on the lower gain structure.

My personal favorite though is an At Mars Specialist. Octal. Sounds good with everything. Based on an old movie projector sound section. Affordable.

    Re: New digs in Cowtown

Yeah, biggest thing is matching the cabinet for the venue. decide whether you want and open or closed-back sound first. Then do you want clean headroom or a overdrive? Match the speaker(s) to the situation and then drive it with style of amp you want.

Sounding good is an end-to-end solution. You also have to keep in mind that all the boutique equipment in the world in your bedroom will never sound as good as a RAT into a Peavey Bandit that's properly mic'ed and pumped through a few thousand Watts into mains and echoing back off the hills. The best way to sound big is to go big.
