How do you store your guitars?

    Wall hangers?

    Bench rests?

In their cases? (In this case, in which position?)

Under your bed? (you guys would be surprised if you actually knew how many people do that)

I keep mine in their cases, resting on their sides like this:

Currently I've got five guitars in cases, one on the workbench, and thirteen on stands. I have silica packets in all my cases btw.

    The main 13 on stands...

Re: How do you store your guitars?

My guitars live in their cases. Usually wherever I dropped them after the gig. If they're wet when I get home I leave them in the mud room overnight. If it's really late or I'm bushed or there's a show the next night I'll just leave them in the car.

One of the beauties of high-quality guitars is that they can take a beating on the road and keep on ticking. Just get good cases and leave them in them.

I have a beater I keep in a stand in my studio for practice or recording ideas, but everything else is cased and thrown in the corner.

In fact, at gigs I rarely "display" my guitars on stands. I put them in the cases on the side of the stage between sets. Eliminates the having them get knocked over and broken when you need them the most.

My Fender style guitars are on stands in my "studio" or in the last gig bag they were carried in for rehearsal. My Gibsons and Martin are in their cases.

I put lag bolts through them into the walls, doesn't everybody do that? Uh....

The Gibson stays in its case on the floor, standing up against the bookcase. The Squier and the borrowed acoustic on stands on top of the bookcase(s). The half of a bass is sitting out on a card table, waiting for the day I finally drill the neck and install the tuners and mount the neck on the body.

Three on wall hangers, two or three on a hercules rack, one leaning wherever and a couple in cases. All depending on what I'm doing.

Re: How do you store your guitars?

All 7 on wall hangers. I like being able to see them. And I'm playing a little more, so like Harleytech, I like to be able to grab them. I really ought to look into a humidifier.

Same as Willie and Harleytech. I like having my favorite guitars on display and having instant access to them. I've also had guitars that sat in cases for extended amounts of time and wound up with mildew or residue on the fret-boards and bodies. I guess what works for some doesn't work as well for others.

No joke. 18 LP and SG type cases fit in there. The outside row upside down is the only way to make them fit like that. The guitar "sits" on it's shoulders when the case is upside down as opposed to the butt. Makes no difference. The two on the top are a pain in the rear as they have to be put in before the last 4 in the front row. Other than them they are really pretty darned accessible. I can get to the back row either wall in less than a minute.

The nice thing about the safe is it is modular. It comes on a skid and the sides are 4 panels then the back and front. It bolts together from the inside and is insulated with both fiber blankets and panels. The door weighs about 90 pounds but the rest of it can be moved easily by one person up stairs and through narrow hallways. It could be built inside a closet. And they are not terribly expensive...

I gotta start looking at humidifiers. We are going to move up in the mountains. Down here in Texas it's always humid as hell. Up there the 40 year olds look like 60...

what are those things on top of the safe?

If I were to ever build up a guitar collection again (I had 15 guitars at one point, hard to believe nowadays) I'd like a safe like that. Is that the SnapSafe model?

Re: How do you store your guitars?

I believe those are combo amps up top. Looks like a Snap Safe Super Titan... fireproof too! Great idea to keep guitars safe and secure.

Re: How do you store your guitars?

Yes and yes. Snap Safe Titan Super Titan single door fire rated at 2300 for 60 minutes, but I don't really wish to test that part. And those are (left to right on what you can see) Mesa Mark 5 Twenty-Five, my favorite At Mars Specialist, and a reissue 57 Fender Handwired Deluxe head. I keep covers on everything because I HATE dusting and I HATE dusting electronics even more.

    The wrong way, of course!

The guitars I play most often are on stands. The rest are in cases, stood upright. In my "guitar closet."

Did all those Fender cases come along with the guitars or did you buy some of them separately?

I have tried literally a dozen different humidifiers and this one is hands-down the best one - and not the most expensive.... https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HCM...ell+humidifier

I use this little guy in my "studio". It works great in the small space but needs to be refilled often.

Thank you! That will fill the bill nicely. I am going to get a couple before I move. My experience with whole house units has been less than stellar but that was many many years ago. One of these in the guitar room would be perfect!

how many quarts/gallons are the tanks? I think it said two. Are the tanks integral parts of the unit or individual bottles?

I'm currently using an Essick Aircare console humidifier, with a 2.5 gallon bottle. One upstairs one downstairs. At the peak of the heating season I'm filling the bottles in both machines 3 times a day. I was able to snag an extra bottle at a hardware store and I have a third machine in reserve, so I have two bottles for each machine. That really helps for those times when you find the bottle is empty and you either don't have time to refill it or it's late and you just want to go to bed. A bottle will barely last overnight during the colder part of winter. When it gets stupid cold it can go through almost 4 bottles a day. And I still barely get the humidity over 30%. If I'm lucky, don't miss a single refill and have fresh filters, I might occasionally hit 34%. This house gets so damn dry it's ridiculous. Even with those two consoles I still think I could use a small machine in the music room, which has the greater baseboard heat to room size of the upstairs and often is the warmest room in the house. Which means it also has the greater propensity to being dryer as well. I'm thinking of acquiring a new (to me, anyway) acoustic and I'd really like to leave it out. Part of the reason why I parted with my HD-28 was I left it in the case all the time and it barely got played.

All of my guitars have come with cases. I purchased a replacement case for my 1957 ES-225 as the original was falling apart. G&G shipped a replacement tweed case for my new 2016 White Ash Tele as the original had a broken clasp. They didn't ask me to return the original (so it's unused).

The case I received with the 50th Anniversary Strat wasn't the original, but it was a Strat case, and had been decorated with 50th Anniversary candy, so I decided to keep it. :)

I think it's 1 1/2 gallon in each of the two tanks. They pull off to refill separately. I did a whole review of it a couple years ago on Amazon - can't find it now, though. I've reviewed about a dozen different humidifiers for Amazon over the years (I'm an Amazon "Vine Voice" and get stuff for free to review and they often target me for humidifiers - including a $500 Dyson humidifier that didn't do anywhere as good as this one) - this is the one I actually bought. You need to flip the filter every day or two, in the dead of winter I refill once a day or day and a half. The ONLY complaint is that the tops of the tanks are not flat, which means it's a pain to hold onto them while you refill them, but that is my only complaint. Filters last a month or two. If you add a bacteriostatic fluid they last a bit longer. The filters also help remove cr@p from the air around you.

I want very much to try one, which is probably an extraordinarily bad idea akin to crossing the streams (thanks, Ghost Busters). If I do I can almost be sure I'll need to get one.

Re: How do you store your guitars?

They are tremendously interesting beasts. Though I am a P90 guy, I slightly favor the humbuckers on these. They do their own winds and they got something horribly right. They have a new one out that looks like a P90 but is a humbucker and I think they sound like crap. My P90 is a dreadnaught and is wonderful in it's own right and I play it almost as much, but the one above is SO damn easy to hit the sweet spot on I am floored. I literally play them completely differently than my other beasts. They really grab you. And they weigh nothing! All mine have the Brazilian boards, and Honduras hog necks, and regular tuners (not the fancy ones). Only the bass top cost me slightly extra ($250), the others are the base (free) ones.
