    Clean Strat, Clean tone

I polished up my 57/62 pup'd AmStd sunburst Strat last night for my little weekly gig. Used the Rat for distortion. Didn't like that so switched back to an OD. Didn't like it, so went back to the rat. I had to have one or the other for what we were doing, and the Ratt did it's job perfectly.

But... I hate covering over the wonderful clean sounds of that Strat. I don't mind the natural OD when my DRRI is cranked, but I like effects less and less--except when recording, where some songs call strongly for it.

I'm not a puritanical purist about it, and I certainly use all manners of effects with my keyboard...

I have yet to find an overdrive pedal that I'm actually happy with. I've finally accepted the fact that they sound like overdrive pedals, not cranked amps. I prefer a distortion pedal with a clean amp, anyway.

COMPLETELY understand! I like and use FX, but don't rely on them for "my sound". As much as I use them, I've always preached my philosophy of getting a good sound with your guitar plugged into the amp. FX are there to augment or change your tone.

I've got an old MXR Distortion that has pretty much been a constant companion since about 1982.

Mostly just add some hair and boost with it.

my strat build that I parted out last year had such an excellent clean tone. It recorded very well. I did a bunch of pedal stacking, well, as much as you could with just 4 pedals
