    Re: Des anybody remember Woodstock?

You weren't even born yet, Sergio.

I'd like to say that I was at Woodstock, but the truth is that even though I had a chance to go, I had a job that thought otherwise. I spent the weekend of Woodstock driving a formula race car tow truck and trailer from Virginia to Georgia. The owner/driver had become afflicted with Diabetes, which put an end to his driving and flying (he was an airline pilot at 24) careers. We drove to his family home in Georgia to "retire" the race car business.

All in all, I think I would have enjoyed Woodstock more.

I was about 8. I remember hearing about it, and my brother brought home the album. We sat around the turntable with the volume low and listened to the Fish cheer, hoping Dad wouldn't hear it and say once again, "That stuff's going to warp your brain." We listened to the music and back then, hoped our parents would allow us to listen.

    I understand oerfectly well, Willie.

My own raising wasn't so different, believe me or not.

My old folks wouldn't accept rock n roll either as music nor as a lifestyle for their son to follow.

I'm afraid I deveived them deeply.

I was 11, I kind of doubt my parents would have let me go. They were still disapproving of my fondness for the Beatles. Go see 100,000 hippies (what was expected to show?) Not in this lifetime, boy.

I remember my dad shaking his head over the Beatles, complaining about their "silly" haircuts and "all that yeah, yeah, yeah" stuff.

I was in the Gulf of Tonkin doing air traffic control.
We had a guy on board ship who's sister in San Francisco would send new music on reel tape. She managed to score a bootleg tape just a few weeks after the show. When the music came out on vinyl, we had already heard most of it!
(Other than the music, I'm glad I wasn't there!)

I'll bet you have some interesting stories, Bill. That must have been an amazing experience, even if it was non-eventful.

    Re: Des anybody remember Woodstock?

No one shot at us, we generally were 100 mi off the DMZ, steaming in circles. We had the newest radar systems, and a couple of us each shift would do traffic control for flights from the carrier. We directed the pilots to co-ordinates to begin their run, and then picked them up again when they were back over water, and got them back to the carrier.
We picked up several pilots that couldn't get back to the carrier, (I was also a "ship's swimmer"). We would get close to the pilots, then a couple of us would swim up to them with an inflatable and get them in, and back on board ship. (Fortunately, all we picked up on that deployment, only had minor injuries!)
When I go in for VA checkups, the nurse always has a form to fill out, and asks if I was sexually harrassed in the service. I used to say no, but then started asking them if they ever seen how the bar girls act in a liberty port!

Good stuff, Bill. Thanks for telling us of your experiences. I'm not a military buff, but the military interests me, especially in terms of historic conflicts.

    Re: Des anybody remember Woodstock?

On a musical note, the ship had a drumset, and several of us had guitars, and amps, so we played a little when we could! 3 of us even took over the stage in clubs in Japan, and the Phillippines for a few tunes! (I'm still amazed at the bands that played over there, most couldn't speak any english, but knew all the popular tunes, and played them perfectly!)
We once dragged a friend from Mississippi to a club in Subic Bay, that had a great band. They had just finished a set with Cream, and Hendrix tunes featured, our friend stood up and said, "you don't have a hair on your ass, if you can't play any country!" The guitar player, (who did an amazing Jimi impersonation), said, "for you fat boy", and they knocked out a Wynn Stewart tune perfectly! I shamed him into putting money into their tip jar.

You know, Sérgio, there's an old saying: If you can remember the Sixties, you weren't there!

    Re: Des anybody remember Woodstock?

wait, what? Wasn't that also true of the Seventies? I can't remember.

um, yeah, I highly doubt my overly (or so it seemed to me at the time) protective parents would have let 11 year old me go off to Woodstock, unless I went with my Boy Scout troop or something.

"Where are you camping this weekend?"

    "Some place called Bethel, NY."

"Ok, have a good time. Bring extra underwear and bug spray."
"Live and learn and flip the burns"
