...aaaaaand we're done (with the chassis wiring):

Heater wiring and AC cord in place:

One thing about working in IT, there's never a shortage for big ol' FAT power cords for servers:

The newer PRRI power transformer doesn't have the center tap for the heater winding...did the ol' 100ohm-to-ground simulated center tap as a result - you can see it on the lamp assembly:

On to the cabinet - and I need to do the speaker plug and wiring, but that should about wrap it up:

    "...pray do not imagine that those who make the noise are the only inhabitants of the field;
that, of course, they are many in number; or that, after all, they are other than the little,
shriveled, meagre, hopping, though loud and troublesome, insects of the hour."

    The amp? Yes.

    The cabinet? No.

    Re: Princeton Reverb Reproduction

Got a few minutes on this New Year's Day to get the inside of the cabinet stained. Looking to simulate the look of the smoke-stained cabinets that the originals have a lot of times. Here's what I was going for:

I think I got pretty close:

Now to let it dry and get some tolex on it!
    "...pray do not imagine that those who make the noise are the only inhabitants of the field;
that, of course, they are many in number; or that, after all, they are other than the little,

    Re: Princeton Reverb Reproduction

The weather was finally warm enough to glue some tolex on.

One side on, glue drying on the other side:

Sides on, glue for the top piece drying:

All covered and hardware installed with a dry fit of the baffle and chassis:

The interior stain looks pretty good, I think:

Not long now! Just need to paint the baffle, put on some grill cloth and get a speaker mounted:

that, of course, they are many in number; or that, after all, they are other than the little,

    Thank you!

I'm still amazed that 50 years later we can still get the parts needed to make these things. So much fun!

I once did a blonde VV where I stuffed in the 6G16 bias vary trem instead of the BF opto-isolator trem:

Got the speaker baffle painted, covered and installed!

The interior stained turned out great:

Just need the reverb tank installed and to make the speaker cord/plug now.

    Soooooo close now.

I am mightily impressed with your craftsmanship, attention to detail, and care you've put into this beauty! I have no idea how the price of the components and your labor compare with the retail price of one new. But better still is the fact that you know every piece of it down to the smallest screw and solder joint. Well done!

I have to admit, I love seeing a build thread for the "business end" of the guitar/amp combination.

Aww, shoot, who am I kiddin'? I love pretty much any build thread!

But, detailed amp builds are few and far between.

    Again, very nice work!

    ...aaaaaaand...THAT'S A WRAP!

The Princeton Reverb Repro LIVES! Fired up perfectly on the first try.

    Toobz:

    Tube Chart:

Testing, 1...2...3... is this thing on?

All wrapped up and ready to play:

Biased it around 63% max plate dissipation and the plate voltage is running around 424V - not too far off the original spec of 410V! Now it's time to get to know her.

    Re: Princeton Reverb Reproduction

    Thanks, guys!

I got a little bit of time with it tonight and so far, it's nice. Very quiet...not a lot of noise even with the Tele in neck or bridge pickup under a fluorescent lamp. A bit quieter than the Deluxe Repro.

The tremolo is nice...I love bias-vary trem. I have it biased around 63%, but I may turn it down to 60% to get the trem a bit richer. Also, the 12" Celestion works well in this on clean volumes.

When I get more time, I'll hit it with an OD pedal and see what it does!

    Re: Princeton Reverb Reproduction

When I powered up my last build, (on the cradle), I had some hum! I wiggled wires, and finally figured out I still had the soldering iron on, next to the chassis. I then plugged the Tele in and again had some hum. I realized that the overhead light was on a dimmer, turned it off, and all was well!

They're pretty similar in color, especially if the PR has a 12" speaker.

The bigger differences will be in the feel. It's lower wattage so breakup characteristics are going to be different, the phase inverter in the PR is not the same and the tremolo is bias-variable term, not the optoisolator.

Definitely a true Blackface sound, but it's got its own feel.

The PR has a little more mids, too. Plus it breaks up more ratty when you crank it. The PR's tremolo is better (in my opinion) as long as the bias isn't set too hot. Best of all, they weigh under 30 pounds!

That makes a lot of sense to me--only because I've hung out here long enough to learn from you guys about amps. Thanks.

Exactly! The lower the bias, the more strong the trem is on these.

I don't do a lot of natural OD on BF style amps...usually use a pedal when needed, but you're spot on with this description.

I might play with speaker changes to see if it helps the natural saturation.

I don't either. I like to set BF amps clean and use a distortion or overdrive pedal for dirt.
