Woo Hoo!
Saw Jimmie Vaughan last night and he signed my JV Strat pickguard. Before I put it on the guitar, what's the best choice to protect? Clear enamel or lacquer? Don't want to melt the gaurd.

I'd try an enamel. It should be more durable than lacquer. But, you also need to be concerned about the ink bleeding when you apply the finish.
You should make a test piece, using the same type of pen that was used, and see how finish affects it. It looks like just a Sharpie was used, but it would still be good to try a test piece:
I would not install it on any guitar. There's really no way to protect it. But your best bet would be to get some sort of adhesive/static film & cover it that way. If you try some sort of clear finish, what are you going to do if you screw it up? Are you going to ask Jimmy for another autograph?
btw- my Albert Collins autographed Tele pickguard is mounted for display
^^^ This is a better idea.
Well, I will be seeing him again in October.
I have the single ply white guard from my early '80s Tele I could test with sharpie and rattle can clear enamel. But I've been waiting to see what happens with this guy's auction before messing it up.

Back to reality. Good points all. Hard to resist putting it back on the guitar though, even knowing that the Albert Collins signed pickguard would be in a lighted shadow box hung next to the guitars in my house. I'll probably mount if for pics then pull it off and display it.

Yup. Some pics would be cool, but make it last!
Ok, coming back off now and into a frame.

Oh dang- there you go. That looks cool.

Next time you get a celebrity's signature...get a picture of him (and you) signing it as proof of authenticity. ...just saying.
That oly white looks good!

Mixed monitors for the man once, what an awesome dude! He came up after the show, gave me a BIG hug, and thanked me for my hard work and said he hoped I enjoyed the show... I mean, SERIOUSLY, how much cooler can someone be? That night will live in my mind forever.
Congrats dude! And yeah, stick that thing in a safe spot!!! No need to try and 'keep it nice". Buy another pickguard and use that on the guitar.
"don't worry, i'm a professional!"
