    6g3 Brown Deluxe

If you haven't seen it at the sister site.

I've always wanted a Brown Deluxe, the 6G3, the Nasty Fender.

It starts in the usual way.

Boxes mysteriously show up on my doorstep.

Two minutes after unboxing the cabinet, Lucy Beans has approved and made it her own.

Feet, handle, and a really perfect chassis from Seaside Chassis Design/Seasidemusic.

Great chassis, bent to exactly what I needed... 1/8 shorter than normal to accommodate this cabinet.

On a side note, Seaside is closing at the end of 2015 so order now. Good people there.

    Turrets, Boards, Hammers, and Thumbs.

I've never made my own turret boards before.

    Layout.

A trio of 1960's Alnico speakers have arrived.

    12" smooth,

    12" ribbed,

and an 8" to replace to 8" that I have in the Champish. More on that later.

    Laying out the boards.

I'm putting the filter caps inside so space will be tighter than usual.

Spaghetti Fender Style wiring will still be used... No worries...

I hope relocating the filter array within the chassis doesn't induce any hum into the circuit......

Nah, nothing that the Fender style spaghetti wiring didn't already have.

Well, to tell the truth I never had an original in my grubby little hands.

Jacks, pots, sockets, transformers, etc., installed.

    Made a plexiglass faceplate.

Transformer barely slides past back rails.

    I almost fouled that up.

And and a preview of the front.

    Chassis mounting holes drilled.

Funny reflections on faceplate, no cracks.

Are you going to etch or engrave that front panel with markings and nomenclature for the controls and inputs?

    Nah..

    I'm liking the clean appearance.

6 knobs is about my memory limit, though.

So far, it looks very nice. I really like how cleanly you've laid out and soldered in the components on the turret board.

This looks like a lot of fun.

One of the best threads ever.

What a lot of fun to see that progress and the steps to get there.

Here is a completed picture of it idling happily on the bench.

It sounds magical, the tremolo is just thick as syrup and it Really wants to be nasty.

I'm as happy as a gator with a duck.

    Re: 6g3 Brown Deluxe

And a long rambling tone review.

    I used a pedal for tremolo on/off,

I used an enormous volume of scotch, and,

    I turned it up.

    Stratocaster on Normal and Bright,

    Volume at 3/4.

Les Paul on Normal and Bright,

    Volume at 5/8.

Rolled vol and tone to clean it up.

A very nice gritty and compressed tone from the ribbed Heppner when wide open that fell to a happy chime when volume was reduced.

I have no desire to try the smooth cone Heppner, well....maybe.

    In Summary:

The 6G3 Brown Deluxe is a very versatile circuit,

I erased references to Booker T and Bad Co.,

I'll just leave it with a comment from my wife when I came to bed at 2am.

Mrs. Gator, "Damn, was that you?"

    Re: 6g3 Brown Deluxe

    Well, I tried a Celestion G12-65.

It has been well pummeled in my Marshall 4010 for the last 33 years.

Mexican Stratocaster, normal and bright inputs.

    3/4 volume and 3/4 tone.

Very loud, very little amp compression.

    Loud hairy edges.

I had the tone closer to 7/8 w/the alnico Heppner speaker.

Great punch and power in this combination.

    Sounds Really, Really Good.

Les Paul 2002 R8. Wagner Fillmores bridge and neck.

    WOW!

At 3/4 volume with this is full on mean Rock and Roll.

With a little volume control, I can get great cleans with exceptional definition and attack.

What I lost with the G12-65:

    Alnico chime,

    Alnico compression,

    Alnico warmth.

What I gained with the G12-65:

    Spl,

    Grunt,

    Punch,

    And a little Britt.

I'm probably going to give this one to my Mother.

She loves to fingerpick and sing old torch songs, so the Alnico will probably go back in.

If I was going to keep it, I dunno.

Might try an EV or a Black Shadow(gasp) before it goes.

And I'm sure his parents - especially his Mom - are very thankful to Grand-pop for that little (butt)nugget of wisdom you imparted.
