Purple Haze and Hey Joe on a Tele?

I stumbled upon this article from Gibson.com of all places where they talked about Hendrix's guitars, amps, and effects with help from Roger Mayer. According to the article Hendrix used Noel Redding's Telecaster for Purple Haze and Hey Joe. I figure Gibson has no dog in the fight, and if anyone would know it would be Roger Mayer. Thoughts?

I had read that as well, many moons ago. It may have been a Chas Chandler interview from back in the '70s. But it seems to me the songs involved were "Purple Haze" and "Fire".

This was posted on the LPF too. Any answers there?

I have no dog in the fight, but I don't know why those tracks couldn't be with a Tele.

In a way, I hope that it's true.

Many famous recordings were done with different instruments than the ones the artists are famous for playing throughout their careers.

It is said that David Gilmour recorder Another Brick in the Wall part II with a Gibson Les Paul, instead of his iconic strats.

One thing I know for sure is that Jimmy Page recorded Whole Lotta Love and lots of Led Zeppelin II tracks with a Fender Tele...

George Harrison and John Lennon are and maybe will always be remembered handling their all time classic Epiphone Casinos, but they recorded a lot of things with a pair of blue Fender Strats, and Harrison also played a Gibson SG at some point.

Hendrix playing a Tele? Well I don't see why not, except that being a left handed man, I don't think the Tele would be the most comfortable guitar to play upside down...

I'm a lefty too. My first electric was a righty Tele copy. Really awful, but I learned a lot on that ax.

The Strat is not exactly comfortable to play upside down, so a Tele may not have been much more of a challenge to him.

BTW. Most notably, the lead on Nowhere Man is all Strat.

Indeed, many Beatles' songs are strat (and tele)records.

Too funny! A couple of years ago I wanted to record my version of Purple haze and since the only Fender I had was a modded up Roadworn Telecaster, that's what I used. This is me playing the Tele, the drums and a Fiesta Red Squire Precision bass.

It was a '54 or '55 goldtop with P90's. I saw a YouTube video where he was talking about that song with that guitar. I don't think that's the only song he cut with that guitar, but I can't remember what those other songs were off the top of my head.

I'd be really interested to know all of the songs Page cut with a Tele. I wouldn't be surprised if it showed up more often than LZ1 and Stairway.

Used to tell my students that it's not what you use to play. It's how you play that counts.

The tone starts out in you mind. Then it goes through your fingers. The rest is actually minor stuff, as so much gear is just fluff. Eye candy and ego building stuff. It's how you get it to the listener that makes the difference and not what you used to do so.

You can hand Page an entry level guitar of choice and plug him into a cheezy amp and when he hits a note it'll sound just like guess who? Page, of course! It's his brain and fingers doin' the business. Of course it'll sound like him!

It's the same with any of us. I've been playing well over half a century now. You hand me ANY guitar and plug me into ANY amp and I'll sound just like I always do. Same with any of us. Different gear makes surprisingly little difference in overall performance and tone. Though I've seen some folks suddenly "feel inspired" when they play different gear. They believe they've "risen in skill" suddenly. But it's like driving a new car compared to your old one. It's still driving. Just with a different car is all. Nothing's changed in you, just your wheels.
