Excellent. Also check out the 10 Douchiest Guitarists. Comments on John Mayer are spot on.

Cool, I pretty much agree on all points except the Doctor Blues part, as any guy who plays well enough to gig deserves my respect. If they have a daytime job matters not.

I think there's a place for everyone, and besides not everyone had the chance to become a professional musician when younger, as a matter of fact it is not easy.

But, like I said, I agree with everything else. And I must say, the "Life of the party" is the shittiest!

"Are you that dude that pulls an acoustic guitar out at parties and sings songs? Go fuck yourself. No one wants to hear you stumble over a Dave Matthews or a John Mayer song while you eyefuck girls. Leave the iPod on and grab another beer, you cretin. Also, you're probably not playing the song right: Every song on the planet was not constructed solely out of barre chords."

God, I HATE people who pull the acoustic (especially if it's a nylon strung one, those are made for classical playing, for Christ's sake. Lose that pick and learn how to finger something serious) and bar chord the veeeeeeeery same shitty songs. It's no freekin' Luau, damn it!

    Re: Five signs:

My time spent working in a shop for ages as a luthier and amp tech gave me lots of perspective on guitarist in general. One was that even though I've played for decades, I AM NOT that great of a guitar player! Guys like Buddy Whittington or Andy Timmons would come by for a visit and show us all what real guitar playing was all about. And another was the fact that every kid that came in and picked up a guitar would play the first five bars of about 25 different intros to songs and thought they were guitar gods. And they'd do so at warp speed to the point like they were trying to set fire to the fingerboard with the friction generated by their fingertips! At first it was amusing. Later it just became annoying.

I'd be behind the bench working on this or that and the kids would often overlook me as I was sorta out of the way really. And no one ever expects that the dude in the apron working on stuff would even know how to play anything. Their thoughts in general was "He's that old dude that fixes crap. He don't play." But now and then when I'd finish up with an instrument and after tuning it all up I'd often play some classical like something from Bach or Brahms and they'd all stop chattering about who had the fastest chops and stare. It was funny. And I'm an average, just above poor guitarist in my opinion. But I'd look up and say "What? Oh, I get it. I don't do the fretboard masturbation that you guys do. Sorry. Oh, can anyone tell me what mode that was by the way?" They'd look at each other for a second, then scoff, and go back to their fretboard masturbation by playing as fast as they could skipping dozens of notes along the way. Just gotta love those young'ens huh?

Younger players are often funny, indeed.

I always frown when I hear pearls like "Jimmy Page? He's sloppy, I can't stand his live playing"or "Classic rock? It's just old rock."

Many kids today learn from youtube and often have no clue about what exactly they're doing, as long as it's fast, it's ok.

I began my "career" as a classical guitarist, and I learned the old way. Classes at a University, and sheet music had to be ordered by mail or copied. Good guitars weren't easy to find or affordable to most beginners unless you lived in a big city...

These days, if you want to learn a song, all you have to do is browse the internet. 90% of the chances are you are going to find a walkthrough video. You will eventually play the song without even having to understand it.

Hey, that's good, actually! That ain't bad at all. But fact is, anyone who wants to play will most likely be able to buy an inexpensive guitar that does the job (the cheapos back in the late 70s and early 80s SUCKED in every aspect. Today we have low end guitars that are good enough) and learn how to strum.

Good thing of that all? Now it's not all about if you can play or not... It's about if you really love it.

Anyone can play the guitar, good or bad. But only the ones who have the love and the feeling for it will carry on and dedicate themselves, become real musicians, like Ranger up there.

The flip side of the coin is all the clueless parents who push their little tykes and tykettes into music without even considering that the kids may not have the motivation, desire, or aptitude for the discipline. They drag the urchin down to Guitar Circus, pay full list for a Squier Mini-Strat and a Marshall micro stack, then become disappointed when the child would rather play X-Box with his buds or surf for porn on dad's computer when he thinks the folks aren't looking. Mom and pop take a bath on the cost of the gear outlay and yet another basement-dwelling slacker is born.

    Re: Five signs:

So true about forcing young ones into music when they have no desire to be there. At the shop I did all my work at I'd also instruct basic guitar and music theory. The owner then could spend his time dealing with walk in customers and I'd teach the basics. We had two other guitarist with far greater skills to teach the intermediate and advanced. But it was always easy to spot the ones that wanted to be there and those that would rather be elsewhere. When a kid would declare "This blows! I'd rather be out doin' (fill in the activity) than this crap!" then when mom or dad would come to pick him up I'd tell then to stop wasting their money on their son's guitar lessons as he hates it. May not have made extra money for me or the shop, but I always figured the truth was easier to deal with. That way they could quit spending money on music stuff and keep a fund for the kid's bail at a later date!

I was lucky in that my mother was a gifted pianist and was concert grade material. But best of all was her knowledge of music and music theory. That's where I learned what I later taught when not rebuilding something on the bench. And today is her birthday by the way. Though gone since 1984, her teachings and spirit of music still lives in me I guess. Guess it was good to have a mentor in your own home as a kid huh?
