using two single core cables for a single XLR?

A friend gave me multi cable, like snake cable, but they are all single core shielded wires.
Can I use two cores and the shields to make a single balanced XLR connection?

Yes, be careful to wire the pins correctly though. There's a + - and a ground. So as long as you get the "pin out" correct you'll be golden.
