    New toy

Was on vacation in CA a few days ago, and picked up one of these (sans case)

A MIJ Kentucky (Saga) 5-string solidbody mandolin. All I need to do is to learn how to play it.

Sounds pretty decent. I've discovered the hard part is that nobody makes 5-string mandolin string sets, so you sort of have to make your own. Not only that - nobody makes 0.050" loop end strings for the low "C", so you have to take a guitar string and chop the ball out of it without damaging the loop.

There's a guy named David Goodrich who used to play a lot with Peter Mulvey. He did incredible stuff on (I believe) a Fender electric mandolin, with loops and some boss multi-fx.
The live album, Glencree is a nice showcase, as well as an excellent record.
