Which year early 50's teles are best?

I own a '59 slabboard tele that is unreal, but i've been thinking of trying to get into a blackguard tele.
Which years are generally better, tone/playability wise?
I notice many 53's in apparently high regard (Gatton, Buchannan, etc.)-
Is that coincidence, or was that a particularly good year as far as the features went?
I've played a few early ones (don't know what years they were) that were heavy, deadish, and had baseball-bat necks-
I'd hope to find one with a less-huge neck, if any were made-
I expect that there was a lot of variability between each individual guitar, but in general are any years generally better for playability/tone?

There is really no magic year and each instrument no matter what year made should be judged on its own merit.

Personally I like the 53's best but for no special reason.
