    Vintage Strat hardware guide

It's no shocking revelation to most Stratocaster fans that this guitar has undergone numerous changes over the years regarding hardware, body cavity routs, bridge configuration, and other less significant details. This can be bewildering to many folks who've not watched the guitar as it mutated from its original design and can be a genuine PITA when trying to buy replacement parts to restore or repair a vintage instrument, or to build a vintage-spec clone. The "learning curve" can prove to be very steep when sorting out the available components -- trust me, I paid a modest price for the privilege. As I began assembling and hot-rodding various Strat models I also made note of each part I purchased and began itemizing the official Fender part numbers. The following list inventories every part needed to keep a 1954 through 1970 Stratocaster performing at peak efficiency (less a body and a neck) or to build an all-new clone of same. I've listed only a few of the Fender pickup sets since there are so many different ones available. Likewise, Fender catalogs many more pickguards though these are generally used on the newer American Standard and Deluxe instruments. In those few instances where a Fender part (or part number) was not available, I have suggested suitable replacements from aftermarket sources. My hope is that this list will keep others from erroneously buying un-needed or unusable stuff.

    Best of luck

    Excellent list, Thanks PM!

I know it took me a while to find a gold vintage style hardtail for a RC clone I have in the works.

    This one:

    http://www.guitar-parts.com/products...ridge-Gold.htm

says it is genuine Fender, but I haven't received it yet to be sure.

was it genuine fender and did it fit the vintage hardtail spacing? I just ordered one as well...

    I don't know.

I was emailed (two weeks after the fact) that the bridge was on back order.

I canceled the order at that point.

Those 'tards jerked me off over the same bridge as well. What I ended up doing was this: I ordered the gold vintage hardtail bridge assembly from Allparts. The plate is a drop-on replacement for the genuine Fender part. However, the generic saddles are the square cast style (as found on the early '70s and beyond Strat models, no "Fender-Fender" logo). I replaced these with gold MIA Fender saddles from a regular vintage trem bridge and was back on track with my project (it was my very first custom build).
