The only thing I can offer here, is avoid Allparts. I bought two pickguards from them and they were off. Hole alignment was bad and size was not correct.

Warmoth tortoise (and their solid white pearl) is advertised as real celluloid, and I think they look swell.

I forget if it came from Warmoth or WD, but I like mine.
The light in this shot makes it look quite red, it's much more brown.

I like my genuine '57 fender guard - but they can be hit or miss.

I know phantomman has some string opinions on this one

    Re: Tortoise Pickguards?

Indeed, Fender's tortoise shell pickguards can be hit or miss -- I bought several until I finally found one acceptable to my eye. And as Fedora mentioned, the Allparts TS's are atrocious. The color is nice but the holes do not jive with existing Fender templates. As well, they are only 3-ply -- real Strat TS guards are 4-ply. I think Robert "71818" indicated that Chandler used to offer some authentic nitro guards in TS years ago but they're long OOP now.

    Re: Tortoise Pickguards?

Im just trying to avoid the disapointment when I inspected a tortoise pick guard on a mid level Martin at the local shop. I could see the halftone dot screen from it being printed on the back ! I was like, wow and you glued that on? They destroyed that guitar with something that cost maybe $1. I will never look a Martins the same way.

I want the color IN the plastic not printed on.

    Re: Tortoise Pickguards?

I had a halftone one came on a P-Bass once - very cheesy.

Here's a shot of mine I got from WD Enterprises in Fla... [hard to believe I ordered this from them 20+ years past now!]. It lined up nicely and hasn't warped a bit [since it's vinyl, not celluloid].

However, I believe you can get decent shell guards for cheap from Asia thru eBay now. [see this green one]

I always liked the look of the DeTemple sing-ply celluloid guards, but I'm not sure if you can order one by itself:

The torty PG that came on my MIM Fender Tele looks great to me. If Fender's stuff is hit or miss, I must have lucked out on this one.

You can also send your original to: http://www.pickguardian.com/pickguardian/

He will cut a exact copy of your original in whatever type of material you want.

I had him cut a Tortise/Mint/Tortise for my 1974 Tele Deluxe. It came out awesome.

    Re: Tortoise Pickguards?

Screw mounting hole placement and countersinking on the pups and switch.

    The '62 is countersunk the '70s aren't.

The currency converter says $140 before shipping.

A bit pricey, but better than ebay seller Portland Music, who is selling them for $175.

Contact forum member TWANG @ the MLP Forum! He will make whatever you need. He made me a tortise guard for my LP JR.
Reasonable price & shipping. Great guy, great service!
BTW he also does amp mods.

I went into the SF Guitar Center and chose the best Fender tortoise pickguard out of five. Some were not very nice.

Looks good with Daphne Blue (better than the plain white that was on it - or at least for me; now it has that 1964 vibe):

What a laugh....just this month I swapped my '87 Strat+ guard back to the original white.

I played a CS Strat with a Tortoise PG that was 1-ply. Anyone know where to get one like that?
