Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen loaned telecaster to John Lennon

Interesting one page story about Rick Niesen's work (with Cheap Trick) as John Lennon's backup band Double Fantasy demos and the telecaster he loaned to John Lennon. Too band the band didn't end up on the finished lp. I thought the music had more edge than the studio musicians Lennon eventually used. (from Guitar Aficiando)

Verboten Cubans...hopefully Rick has wised up and realised those cigars are of questionable quality.
The Masters abandoned Cuba, for all of the fine soil and climate...for Dominican and other places.
I'll take a fine Artero Fuente or Partagus from Dominica over anything Cuba puts out.

That being said, Rick is a serious collector of fine guitars.
That he could share one with Lennon is a special place.

I'm no fan of Lennon, but it deserves that.

    Yeah, as if!
I think deep down, his problem with it is that it didn't have enough necks on it to re-enact Live At Budokan, two songs per neck

MMM, Partagus. Best cigars I've ever personally had...

    Partagas Serie S...fantastic.

If you like Partagas, you might like CAO Cameroon. I like them even more than Partagas, and that's saying a lot.

I guess it is a time and place thing...but the best cigar I've ever smoked was Cuban. Purchased in London during a biz trip, it came after a long, fancy, lazy-susan table Chinese meal. It was golden on the outer wraps, moving into fall tones of rust and orange inside.

Every inhale was like film noire - smooth, flavorful, the feeling of every tiny smoke particle permiating space and time within one's body. The smell was divine. Considering the lasting impression, I give it higher than high marks.

Nearly all the Cuban production goes to Europe via Spain. Not to say you cannot buy a nice Cuban, but don't kid yourself, the best are overseas.

My next favorite were "Penamils" from the Canary Islands. Always nice.

I got out of the Cigar smoking thing seemingly at the same time it became popular...early 90's. My impression is the surge of demand led to a lot of shortcuts, and a lot of "average" being marketing for better.

I'd rather have jammed with JL sans cigars than just have a cigar.

Heck, I'd rather plug my guitar in by myself than smoke a cigar.

I'd like to do all those things at once. Jam with John Lennon while smoking a cigar and plugging my own guitar in.

(This is all starting to sound a little Freudian.)

If by some wierd circumstance, I had the opportunity to jam with John Lennon, at some future date, I'd be sure to talk up the cigars and take a moment to diss the record he was working on.

    clipped for convenience.
I have heard that, and do not doubt that some Cubanos are great.
Quality is the biggest problem...by the time one pays the price, and finds out it is no better than a stick 1/4 price, then it is too late. I personally would not have the gonads to ask for my money back after purchasing a bad Cubano, and never a box!

To the other post...I have never...repeat NEVER had a bad CAO. Of any stripe.
My biggest guilt is storing them and not smoking them enough.
I have a 50 cigar box full of single CAO's my wife gets for me!
Favorite so far has been the CX2 after a grilled steak dinner.

    I respect your rights.
Don't hang out in my garage, or while I grille.
That is one thing missing in modern society-I do not smoke "in public".

Naah, I'm not really down on smoking. I'll smoke as much as four packs of cigarettes in a year. Cigars are just nasty to me.

By the way, someone caught attempting to bring Cuban cigars into the US by way of Canada is subject to being charged with violating the Trading with the Enemies Act.

I wound up denying an application for naturalization based on a guy who was snagged by U.S. Customs with Cuban cigars during pre-inspection while boarding a flight from Toronto to the U.S. He'd flown from the U.S. to Cuba via Toronto. Never saw the charge before or since. He's probably a U.S. citizen today, but would have had to have five "clean years after his bust to meet the "good moral character" requirement for citizenship.

Interesting how I have heard the same stories about both him & paul--that their gear was in terrible shape, and that they still had setlists taped to their guitars.

I agree the Double Fantasy Stuff might have sounded better on the demos (at least what i heard from I'm Losing You)

I saw Dylan recently and was thinking how lucky some of these other 60's acts were to keep on going into the age of modern live sound, and how nice it might be to see the Beatles play and arena and be able to hear them.

I just noticed CAO now has an LX2.
I love Ligero's, I have to get some of these.

    Back on topic.
Yes, Nielsen is a hero in my guitar world.
He loves them, knows them, and best of all, plays them!

yep, uncle rick could come over, bring the cigars and play some guitar with me. i'd even splurge for some decent beer. all he'd have to do is let me know if he wanted bbq sauce or teriyaki for the marinade on the chicken thighs.
