Chords! I must have more chords!!!

Ok, most every jazz player knows these little chord movements (I'll put them in the key of G):
    3X343X (G7)
    5X555X (A-7)
    6X565X (Bbdim7)
    7X578X (G/B)
    &/or
    XX3453 (G13)
    XX5565 (G11)
    XX5656 (Bbdim7)
    XX5767 (G7)
My question is this- are there any corrosponding chord movements for minor keys? In other words, how would this translate into the key of G minor?
    thx

Re: Chords! I must have more chords!!!

I have been playing around with this for the last few days but nothing in the minor key, using the same kind of voice leading, seems to flow smoothly. I think it is because of the Bbdim7. In the first sequence, the Bb on the 6th string is what makes it work because it resolves to B, the third of the final G. If you were to make this a minor sequence by just changing the first and last chords to minor, it would sound kind of lame because the Bb in the dim7 chord would remain on Bb. The same is true with the last change in the second sequence with the Bb on the first string. In both cases, the final change sounds almost cadential, i.e., we are done (the final G7 in the second sequence makes it not quite totally cadential). You can't just "make it minor" because of that Bb. There is something missing from the equation, I think.

If you want that cadential feel, you won't be able to use the diminished 7 with the Bb. You might try taking that down a semitone, like this:

    3x333x Gmin7
    5x555x Amin7
    5x454x Adim7
    3x333x Gmin7

    For the second sequence

    xx3335 Gmin9
    xx5555 Amin7
    xx4545 Admin7
    xx3333 Gmin7

This may not be what you are after, but it may help provoke more discussion!

here's a Gm7 and a few inversions. they work great for comping while letting the bass player identify the root. if that's what you're looking for.

    3X333X

    6X576X

    10X8,10,8X

    13X12,12,11X

    15X15,15,15X

    Try this:

The strings are "vertical" on the page, each line across is a chord, or an occasional single note... read it in the down direction. A space between the lines means to hold the chord a moment...

    (E) (A) (D) (G) (B) (E)
    ........................

    (3) (x) (2) (2) (3) (x)
    (x) (x) (x) (x) (5) (x)
    (4) (x) (3) (4) (5) (x)

    (5) (x) (5) (5) (5) (x)
    (x) (x) (x) (x) (7) (x)
    (6) (x) (5) (6) (7) (x)

    (7) (x) (7) (7) (x) (x)
    (x) (x) (x) (6) (x) (x)
    (x) (x) (x) (7) (x) (x)
    (9) (8) (9) (9) (10) (x)

    (x) (x) (x) (x) (8) (x)
    (11) (10) (11) (11) (12) (x)

    (8) (x) (8) (7) (7) (x)

    (7) (x) (7) (7) (7) (x)
    (x) (x) (x) (x) (8) (x)
    (5) (x) (5) (5) (5) (x)
    (x) (x) (x) (x) (7) (x)
    (3) (x) (2) (2) (3) (x)

    (x) (8) (9) (8) (11) (x)
    (x) (7) (6) (7) (8) (x)

    (x) (0) (11) (12) (12) (x)
    (6) (x) (5) (6) (7) (x)

    (5) (x) (5) (5) (5) (x)

    (x) (5) (5) (5) (5) (7)
    (x) (7) (7) (7) (8) (7)
    (x) (9) (8) (9) (12) (x)

    (x) (15) (16) (15) (18) (x)

    (x) (14) (14) (14) (15) (x)
    (14) (13) (14) (14) (15) (x)
    (x) (12) (13) (12) (15) (x)
    (12) (11) (12) (12) (13) (x)
    (x) (11) (11) (11) (12) (x)

    (x) (9) (10) (9) (12) (x)

    (11) (12) (12) (12) (x) (x)

    (3) (x) (2) (2) (3) (x)

For the last series of chords played up high, just imagine that it is the end of the song, it is slowing down, and all the pretty chords are leading into each other to the end of the song - a lot of songs of this style do this (where even more extra chords are inserted into the progression).
