1965 jazz bass custom painted, now what?

    Hi All,
New here, I came accross a Fender Jazz Bass 1965 (post CBS) #109XXX. Nice shape, needs a good cleaning, however it has been custom painted with gold leaf, pin stripes and initials. Any idea what this thing may be worth, other than paint it appears to be original.?

    Thanks
    Don

as for posting pics, you'll need a hosting site. lily pics and photobucket come to mind.

I Just don't get it, I have no clue how to put pictures on this. I tried to use photobucket but haven't figured out how to link it.

easy, drag your mouse over the picture, then highlight the last one. there should be 4 different choices. then just cut and paste that into this post box here.

Frank, how did you do that? those are the pics, just don't know how or where you came up with them.
Thanks much, I will try to figure it out in the Test area.

So what does any one think? ugly and devaluating or kind of cool.
    They want $1,399 for it.
    Thanks

go to your photobucket page - like chuck said.....
hover over it or wait for the links to display......select the last one - and right click - copy........
go to the text of your post and paste.....

    Or......
Do like I do and just use magic......
    (that works too!)

    try it.......you should be good......

    Frank and Chuck,

I don't know if I would have figured that out if you guys wouldn't have explained how to do it.

I'm trying to find out if the blue was original, (lake placid blue metalic offered 1960 to 73 as a Fender original custom color), or if the whole thing was repainted when the art work and stripes where added.

    Thanks,
    Don

sorry if i came off sounding like a prick in my first post. you'll get dudes that troll for prices, i see why you were asking now.

i'd buy it, offer them 1200 cash. i actually like it the way it is. ugly? yes. do i really like the whole scheme? no. do i think it's wacky and cool for that? yes. obviously someone put a lot of time, effort and money into it.

you should be able to look at the pots and see if it was refined. they would have either desoldered the pots, or clipped the wires. they'd have to do this to get the electronics out so they could spray it. any decent seller would send you got shots of it, or open it up to look inside if it's local.

Re: 1965 jazz bass custom painted, now what?

The color does not appear to be Lake Placid Blue as applied by the Fullerton factory. As well, if this were an otherwise unmolested '65 Jazz Bass the neck plate would be embossed with the large trade-marked reverse Fender "F" and have the instrument's serial number stamped at the bottom. IMO further investigation is warranted -- ask to see pics of the neck heel (a ink-stamped date may be found there), any notations penciled in the neck pocket or stamped beneath the pickguard (factory re-fins often had the new color indicated), and the date codes on the tone and volume pots. The control and pickup cavities should be shielded at the bottom with brass plates and the pickups equipped with foam rubber dampers. In late summer of '65 Fender added white binding to the Jazz Bass's neck, followed by pearloid block markers in December. On the reverse side of the headstock there should be a third strap button.

I'd strip that sucker within hours of gettting my hands on it just to see what the wood looks like under it.

Good wood = leave it natural

    Bad wood = repaint it

I'd do the same with the headstock: strip, new decal, clear with a leetle amber

    but that's just me

    good luck!

I'm going to ask to take it to a local shop and have it checked and photographed. I don't think the seller would have a problem with it.

I do have pictures of the neck plate, based on that it appears to be a true 1965 (post CBS).

My data base confirms the serial number as for a 1965 instrument. I'm guessing mid-year or thereabouts since about half of my entries for that vintage are "L" serials (L + five digits) and the final serial listed is 116XXX.
