"I will NOT drink a Merlot!"
well there you have it!!
Cabernet sauvignon with steak for me...'14 hands' is a good one.
As for effects, the only ones I have used for years is delay and reverb. I have a flanger, wah, etc. but haven't really wanted to use them for a long time. I also have a chorus, not sure how I ended up with that one, I have always HATED the sound of chorus. Not sure why, no one else seems to mind it.
I just use a touch of reverb if the room needs it or a lot if the song calls for it...and I almost always find a need for the old Echoplex. Either a lot for spacey-special effects, or just a little to fill out space and make a riff or lead sound bigger here and there.
I don't know, I used to play with a guy who had a huge pedal board and just looking at it made my head spin. He never seemed to know which one he wanted to use at which part of the song, he was always stomping them on and off at weird times...
OTOH I saw a band play in Hollywood a month or so ago though and the pedal steel player must have had 15 effects laying on a table next to him with a rat's nest of wires connecting them all. He made them all sound good and turned them on and off by hand...I was pretty impressed.
I Think I saw that guy play at Pappy & Harriet's last month. Chris Lawrence?
GOTTA have a boost, maybe THE most important effect (for me).
I wouldn't call a clean boost an effect., as the tone doesn't change, just gets louder/thicker. They don't count.
CT.
Man my boost is not completely clean but boy oh boy does it tranform my amp when I hit it. It's THE one effect I can't live w/o!
I got an MXR microamp back in high school. Sometimes I use it, sometimes a compressor.

I am with Gris my DRRI does need a boost at times, I found the Radical Tonebone Classic works well.
Effects are like hookers, hard to try just one!
Remember! It is the indian, not the arrow! Although the arrow can help.
Wilko> wasn't Chris Lawrence, I forget his name. I was just in a pedal steel store the other day in Oceanside and the guy who runs it said he was just in there looking for an amp. He's been around, played for Son Volt, Ray laMontagne...
I def need a boost at a minimum for my DRRI....

I've got a few effects:
Barber LTD Sr.
Ibanez Chorus
Boss DD7 and RV5
I'll usually just play my Strat straight into my 5E3's, but I've got a great home set up of 2 champs: 1 a 5 watt head going into 1x12 cab and a 15 watt champ in a 1x12 tweed cab.
I'll run that stereo with the above pedals and it's so cool, very dreamy, nice and deep. The amps are pushed and the Barber is very transparent, so it really just gives more control of he natural OD. It's really a fun change from my normal straight in.

You can take that with a grain of salt!

my amp has no reverb so I dont mind a little delay of course you also have to have an overdrive pedal to hit the delay for a solo tone. I have also been asked numerous times "hit that marshall box" because people want me to sound like jimmy page or something (not my bag but w/ever).
however I find that plugging straight in preserves the top end end and gives me the most chime so when I play by myself thats what Im going with. el84s are pretty swirly so it doesnt sound too dry to me.
guitar -> ehx english muff'n -> mxr cabon copy -> amp
I also use this with other people's amps because you can make a ****y amp sound passable (tried this on a traynor solid state and people were complimenting me, I suspect many of them had had one too many beers)
jamming in my jammies with peanut butter and jam: guitar -> amp
