    Hickock 6000A Tube Tester

Gifted to me from a friend.
    How cool is that?

It has an 83 rectifier and a 5Y3 in it.
Think I'll gut it for the tubes.

Seriously...it is a nice thing to play with, even if it isn't the
top shelf tester. It does a lot more than I would have sprung for myself.
And it is portable, very hip case.

This is a pic scarfed to show what it looks like:

Dumb Q (too lazy to google it).
    It will do mutual transconductance.

Does that mean I can match tubes with it?

    Re: Hickock 6000A Tube Tester

YES IT DOES DYNAMIC MUTUAL CONDUCTANCE!! I have the earlyer version of that tester and they are great, so do not junk just for the two retos.
get the calibration info for it off line and check it and then use it. Once I got my resistor valvues togethere to re-set it up it took me all of 1.5 hours to do it. The hardest thing thats involved in it is if you have to unsolder the bias pot case to rotate it, but with my large 50 watt plumbers soldering iron I was able to do it while leaving it in place which saved tons of time and took out the fretting of having the whole pot fall apart if ai took it out.
Cherish that unit as they are getting hard to find!
If you choose to check its calibration and have any questions let me know.

PS, If you do not have a tester that does DMC you will wonder how you have lived so long with out one once you start using that!

Whoah...I WAS KIDDING about gutting it. LOL!

    Thank you steve25.
So, how do I calibrate it?

    Re: Hickock 6000A Tube Tester

    OK, I figured it out.
I re-read the manual and it makes more sense now.
I just have to set the shunt to the range and read the
mutual conductance directly from the scale.

Still, is this the number I use to "match" power tubes
and check for matching twin triodes?

Be careful when you match tubes using a tester. A tester only puts around 150 volts or so on the plates of the tubes and an amp will put anwhere from 350-ish and up. The tubes might not match too closely when you get the voltage up!

    Re: Hickock 6000A Tube Tester

    Thank you Mike.
    Understood.
It is still far better than what I was doing in the past.
    (Plug and Pray).

I tested about 150 tubes and only found 3 absolute duds.
The rest I categorized into their tested numbers.
