After years of farting around with "good" cables in a gigging situation, I used Planet Waves for a pedal board project and have now found these to be a great all around solution - if something does nt work, it is usually at the connector. Remove connector, cut cable tip, insert and push hard (sounds like a cheap porno) and all is rockin' again.
Costs more but who brings a soldering iron to gigs. This shit is cool, or?

When I was playing out in the 1980s, I loved Lawrence cables. You'd go to the music shop and have 'em pull whatever length of cable you wanted off a big spool (good quality stuff, too), then they'd slap a plug on each end. The plugs were one-piece brass deals; you just jammed 'em onto the end of the cable and tightened a little screw on the side that bit through the insulation, made contact with the braided conductor, and held the plug on tight. No little wires or solder joints to short out, and no screw-on sleeves to come loose. Sounded good, too. They did cost more, but we swore by 'em. Called 'em "Larry cables."
I don't know what happened to Lawrence cables. Are they still around? I haven't seen any since I started playing again a few years ago.
(edit: Hm. Did a little googling and found Wilde cables on the Bill Lawrence site, "approved" by Bill Lawrence. They look different from the ones we bought in the 1980s, but they're solderless and seem to work the same way. Was Bill Lawrence behind Lawrence cables?)
Fender usta have those a long time ago as well, Eli. The cables were about ten feet long an' had gray insulation -- the shielding sleeve was a short knurled metal barrel (sorta like a Tele knob). A set screw through the side of the sleeve made the ground connection. Fender usta include one with all their guitars "back in the day". I still have mine from my '66 Strat (wish I still had the friggin' guitar!).

yep, i "borrowed" that same gray cable from a friend with a 52 RI Tele. i guess they still include them with the vintage RI guitars.

George L's on my pedalboard. Great way to go & while not hassle-free, a LOT less trouble than soldered connectors & an easy fix.
And they're the only cables that look sharp enough to go on that epic pedalboard.
Thanks! I did pick them because they made it easy to fit the pedals closer together. The right angled jacks save space & give the board a pretty clean look, I think.
The Planet Waves stuff is similar and actually easier to get here. I started with it on my pedal board - I had the long cables as standard soldered cables but will change this.....I have had no issues in almost 2 years on the stationary stuff on the board (knock on wood)Originally Posted by 71818

i use george l's for the board. standard solder plugs everywhere else. i make most of my cables anyways.

I use George L's on my pedal board and between my pedal board and amp.
George L's on my effects too. And they have been really abused over the years and never given me any problems.

All Planet Waves solderless here. Have a tester from them as well and have 2 guitar cords now with these ends. All gold plated etc....

I have wandered into this thread on a whim - and the first thing that springs to mind is you must do a merry dance controlling all that stuff - I've got a BlackStar DS-2 for a bit of clean boost/crunch or filth - but I suppose it's a way of getting 'multi-channel' with a single channel amp so I couldn't argue with that without contradicting my own principles - but being the chin rubber that I am I'm forced to make one comment in that I'd ditch the compressor (which I don't need on any of my amps - minimal or no GNF is a better route) and stick a tremolo in that slot - cool DIY board dude...

Yeah, you are right - compressor is not used that much. Do not need a tremolo right now - have a DRRI and a TRRI and they have great tremolo - Fender foot switch is always directly to the right in a gig.
A dance, no....a honed skill, well yes.....
It was actually bigger at one time with a tremolo, a volume pedal and another distortion. Down sizing is a matter of time....

I use George Ls on my board as well, and up until now have used them as my guitar cords as well. Lately, I've been having some trouble withem, so I may go to a heavier duty cord of decent, but not extravagant quality, price wise. Any suggestions? Its been a long time since I've bought a simple cord and I know the technology has come a long way.
Cottage, the technology has remianed constant. The snake oil type of hype surrounding them has gone into the UFO/Elvis/Bigfoot category though.

I've been using George L's on my pedalboard as well as from the board to the amp for the last couple years now. I haven't had any issues with the cables themselves at all.
Cottage, I use a Planet Waves cable from the guitar to the pedalboard asI find the George L's too stiff for that purpose. Main reason I use PW is that first it doesn't suck tone as much as other cables do and if anything goes wrong with it, I can always exchange it for a new one as it comes with a lifetime warranty.
