Re: Curtis Stetka's TRRI Custom 15 (with phtots!)

Quick update...the Twin should be in Curtis's hands sometime Tuesday.

Took a bit of time finding a nasty ground loop and solving the lack of tremolo. It's all in tip-top shape now.

I arranged a play test with a colleague in the College of Music who plays a nice '77 SF Twin, and his office is an old recording room for the College, so we were able to crank the Twins and keep out of the line of fire. We started with the SF Twin to get the volume in our heads, then we hooked Curtis's amp to his 2x12 cab.

Curtis's Twin was on 7 and was very full (and loud!). Hearing my friend play his '70s Strat and my Squier Tele through it was just great! Classic sound...a Twin naturally breaking up! FUN!

Now it's up to Curtis to report assuming UPS didn't drop it out of a plane on the way there.

Re: Curtis Stetka's TRRI Custom 15 (with phtots!)

I think this amp establishes beyond a doubt that I am cursed.

TJ tested the snot out of this thing before shipping it. He tested it with two different speaker cabs and with the same tubes I'm using. Bear in mind that all the guts of this thing have been completely rebuilt.

I get it here, put it together, fire it up... it still cuts out.

So I'm left with two possibilities: the speaker and/or the wiring of my house.

I'm leaning more toward speaker. None of my other amps exhibit this behavior.

I did a little jiggling around with the speaker wire and may have stopped the cutting out. I might have some time tonight to take the jack apart and see if there's a short in there somewhere.

    Crazy.

When the amp is working, oh man, does it sound great! It gives me shivers.
    s'all goof.

I am just totally baffled at this. I never had this problem in any of the environments I tested it in. From my house to the campus with a single 4ohm speaker to a SFTR 2x12 cab.

We know it's not the tubes, we know it's not the circuitry, and the only variables left are speaker and power related.

I'm leaning towards the speaker cable. I had a guitar cable that was pretty bad internally in the plug and it did the exact same thing in regards to cutting out.

    Maybe it's the Yankee electrons?

    It's the danged speaker (cable)!

I just tried it out with a PA speaker hooked up and had no problems.

Geez, this was the original problem! Oh well. I've got a fantastic amp out of the deal.

    Thanks for the trouble-shooting, TJ.

My gorgeous wife took a few phtots. This evening I'll take a few more and get them posted here.

I am a happy, happy, happy guy!

    The speaker?!! Nuh-UH! Can't be!

Well, this way you will get much more life out of your circuitry, and all the components inside are upgrades compared to what was on that PCB, that's for sure. Plus, you can follow the original '60s layout drawings for troubleshooting now.

Serious tubes would be SED Winged C 6L6GCs and JJs are always a good bet in the preamp. The new manufacture Tung-Sols are also good, but I don't think they have a 12AT7 (which you need for the reverb and PI).

LOL Curtis that's a bummer to go through all that for a speaker cable but a happy ending nonetheless! Congratulations on your "new" amp.

I couldn't remember right away where those three smaller screws went. I eventually figured it out.
