And i've taken it apart and put back together four times in last hour and have no clue what the deal is??? Except there is a trace for a 0.1 cap and there is nothing there but a hole on one end and a dab of solder on the other...

Egads - it fixed itself! (with maybe a slight assist) Best I can figure is the guy who borrowed it switched batteries and put the bottom plate on 'upside down.' I think the foam strip on there is not to hold the battery in place but rather maybe to prevent the three G-transistors at the other end from shorting out on the bottom plate??? Anyway, it works again now... :-)
