I think getting as close to what you want and modding on your own is still the way to go.

My first run Al3000 Prestige with P90s is pretty bad wicked awesome.....for $350 and a $10 upgrade - Gotoh Bridge/stop bar from craigslist.

pick up a B stock - sometimes....they are FANTASTIC deals........and you could feel less bad about modding.

What blew my mind was that "First Act"- yeah, the cheapie Wal-Mart guitars- has a Custom Shop with premium and expensive guitars! Check out their website.
