And of course, don't forget that ZZ Top's "Blue Jean Blues" was also done with a Tele. And to me, it's one of those great songs I always imagined was done with Pearly Gates, and only a Les Paul could sound like that. (sigh) I was wrong....

POO DAT!!!
GREAT tune... :-)
Yeah, blue jean blues, slap you right in your face, doesn´t it?! Billy created a lot of nice tones and sounds back in the seventies. Always been my favourite player together with Jimi! I love the close to face sounds Billy squezed out of whatever guitar he played on back then.
Remember though...in the recording studio you can get massive sounds with a Tele and a small amp, that you would need a strat or a les paul to sound as big with live. I have all three and more! but I probably play telecaster more than any other.
A Tele and a small amp can still pull it off live, just take a peek behind some of those faux full stacks that many big name acts put onstage, you're likely to find a small amp being mic'd.
POO DAT!!!
Let me bring some closure to this, and bring everyone together on this divideing topic with a statement noone can disagree with; "a Les Paul rules all" .Simple but effective words to live by. My work is done here.
Your sweeping generalization hits its mark with all the trajectorial precision of a randomly-flicked booger.

I can't speak to vintage Tele's - but when I had my AmSt tele I used to delve deep into the Dinosaur Jr/Sonic Youth trick bag - with 2 or 3 dirt boxes ganged up together to seriously mangle my tone. I found that this worked better on the Tele than on the AmSt Strat I had back then...
I find my Tele to be much more versatile - i.e. it can cut a gig where my Strat cannot - but it's because I have 3 aftermarket pickups in there. For clean and light overdrive textures, my Strat sounds grrrrreat...but when I want to add some bark to my bite, it's the Tele that gets the nod...

that can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint-by-number dreams..."
FWIW I find my Strats more toneful than my Tele and more versatile. I do love a good Tele though.
IMO Every decent Guitar Player should have a Good Tele, Strat and Les Paul.

Thats a nice group shot Phantomman.
(Note to self, must do a group shot of my collection someday)
This will have to do for now.
Strat, Tele
and a Les Paul
Why limit yourself ?
Oh man - pass the beano, I've got GAS!

Ahhhhh...
You guys know that I'm more about the craftsman than the tools. Learn how to play, and you can play any guitar and sound good. And toneful.
Phantomman: Love that collection. What kind of Tele is it?
2001 American Standard. When I bought it, it had a S-D "quarter-pounder" in the bridge an' 4-way switching. Not a bad leetle gitt.

Dammitt, I knew you were gonna say that!
Anybody got the phone number for "335s'R'Us" handy......?

My latest addition..
they don't. Strats imho are way more toneful. Love teles though own a few - but Strats are the guitar.
Tubes + Tolex + Tele = Tone
It don' git much better'n that, Brad!

Very nice 68Bassman! Hoorah!

I love Tele tone and strat comfort, so I modded my silo. String through ash body ,maple neck.SD56 bridge ,Fendrer52 neck pickups.Wilkinson Bridge.
Because I never met a Tele that wouldn't roll up it's sleeves, spit on the ground and kick the Strat's ass.
Just that simple. Teles are bad-ass.
At times the tele does but no half sane guitar player would be without a les paul, stratocaster and YES a telecaster, and the tele should be ash body, maple neck and 50's pick ups

Phantomman What a NICE collection you got there
.
telecaster headstocks gross me out. they just look wrong (like kramer headstocks) and that has really been the main killer for me.
they sound different, I personally think stratocasters are better because thats the kind of sound I like. I bolt all my trems down though, makes a big difference imho.
Mitch Mitchell talking about Jimi and strats in general.
If the walrus is Paul then who is Carmen Sandiego?
It took me a while to figure out the whole Tele thang, but eventually i got there. Gots to have a fat maple neck, some type of reasonably trad bridge PU, a 4-way switch and ... the final piece of the puzzle (drum roll) - a STRAT neck PU!!! or at least a Strat sounding one.
My #1 (Tele) now sounds like the best Strat you ever heard when played on the neck PU alone... :-) And, IMHO, there is just nooooo comparison between a Tele and Strat bridge PU sound. When I get another Strat it certainly will NOT have a trad bridge PU - yuk! Only use for that thing is surf music and speciality genre stuff.
I’ve actually started to play my Strat a lot recently – really appreciate it. I also love playing me Tele which I now keep downstairs for those odd ‘killing time’ moments. I also occasionally get my Les Paul out and attack it and still also enjoy playing my old Ibanez bitsa that I recently put a Floyd on.
All of them are toneful – but different. I just feel lucky to have such an arsenal
Oh, I have tried plenty - hard and 'soft' tail. I just can't play a Strat on the bridge alone unless there's a fatter PU in there.
And, I TOTALLY disagree that Teles "don't react well to serious distortion..." IMO it all depends on PUs.
I am not one of these "how does it ring unplugged" or "Strats sound different than Teles because of this, that or the other (except for PUs)" type of guys guys. To me the sound of solid body electric guitars are almost ALL the PUs and amp. I am all about swapping PUs til the guitar/amp/setup sounds good. I have done it so many times I know it works.
But then again, I play LOUD... :-)
