Hmmm....150 tube watts....what do those usually go for do you think? I can only find two online, one on a bass forum was being sold for $375, one on Ebay right now is $799.

Which guy is out of his mind?

Get a Sunn head into a big EV 15", apply effects as needed...you're done.

Yes, I have one of those EV 15 SRO speakers - a true clean machine, and a great sound too.

I just emailed Ted Weber to see what he recommends in this amp for steel. I also mentioned that I prefer a more high-midrangey vintage type sound as opposed to the mellow, bass heavy tones of modern steel guitar. We'll see what he comes up with.

I'm really leaning towards ceramic Blue Dogs, 75w or 100w. They're only $100 apiece, and I like what the Alnico BD I have did to the tone of this thing.

Ted's 12A150W is my fave Weber spkr for exactly that reason... :-)

Really? Exact same reason like for pedal steel, or the more vintage tone factor?

Ted recommended Ceramic California 12s, paper domes. I don't know, I'm eternally curious about getting tones no one else has, I like the idea of getting the Blue Dogs and seeing what they do for me. I'm not sure what I want to do.

Personally, I'm not a fan of any Weber speakers. Way too stiff sounding for my tastes. My vote still goes for the Swamp Thangs....

Well, I justlooked a little closer at those Swamp Thangs. they do look good, and they're cheaper than either of the Webers which unfortunately is a factor for me right now.

I just don't know about thick and chunky though. I really like this guy's tone, kind of sharp and woody. I emailed Ted back and asked what the effeciency rating of the Blue Dog/California speakers are. What he tells me there might also be a factor.

Ok, the Swamp Thang wins in the efficiency battle. They have recently sold for $50-60 used on Ebay, so that's where I'm headed.

Thanks Chris for throwing them out there.

Most Emis are excellent speakers. I have a 'Cajun' in my gigging rig and it sounds great, as did a 'Copperhead' I tried. But, there is no doubt that ted Weber also makes some killer spkrs. Fezzy is just plain wrong when he makes blanket stmts like "NO Webers sound good." There are good and 'bad' ones of all makes.

Well, he didn't say there weren't any good ones, just that they weren't to "his taste". ;)

I might just go ahead and order these from Guitar Center or something, I don't know if I can wait for a deal to pop up on Ebay.

Jammed with the cowpunk band in SD again yesterday, had to plug into a Line 6 4x12. STILL not loud enough!! Both volumes on 10, treble on 8, mid on 10, bass on 6, #1 input on vibrato channel. Glad I was wearing earplugs.

Could my bias also be too low? Would that not help the volume if I fixed that? I could have sworn my Vibrolux got louder when I fixed the bias circuit.

Personally, I don't think Chris has had a chance to taste Weber's best. The stuff that's aimed toward him, like the 10A125, the 10A150, and some others. Weber's got a LOT of speakers, and somewhat analogous to Boogie - only a handful are going to sound right to your ear.

Of course, I could be talking out of my butt. I'm into Weber speakers. But, to be fair, Ted is a good friend of mine, and I have my favorites in his lineup. I've had some speakers I didn't like. However - I can't say whether they just sounded like crap, or whether they just weren't my taste. Lots of people love stuff I think is crap.

Right on. My point is you shouldn't say you're not a fan of ANY spkrs by ABC co. unless you've tried ALL that co.'s spkrs. Think about it... ;-)

    Dumb question...
Is Ted Weber related to Gerald?

I'm enjoying the cheap Weber Sig in the Deluxe Reverb.
But then, a Celestion G12M70 was in that amp for far too long.

It did take a few hours to break it in, it sounds nice and warm now.

No he's not, as far as I'm aware.

    Personally, I love every Weber I've tried. I've got a 12F150 in my 22watt AB763, a 12A125 in my 5E3 (that's a great match) and four Sig 10s' in my 5F6-A.
Saying that, my experience with classic old Jensens is severely limited compared to some guys here so maybe I am missing something.

Not as far as Ted's aware either. I believe Ted and Gerald have had that conversation at some point.

Gerald specializes in manufacturing his own hype.

Ted, for better or for worse, has not maintained his own hype machine. That cuts both ways. All the positive stuff - that comes from real people. Negative stuff - well some of it may come from legitimate complaints. Chris, for example, is not a big fan of the speakers. Not his taste, fine. However, I do know Ted's been shook down from some other boards for advertising fees for offering his considerable non-speaker-related knowledge for free as a member.

Many classic Jensens are really sweet if they're in good condition. They're classic for a reason. Anything with a R, Q, P, or N rating is well worth listening too.

Absolutely, the old Jensens are of course what the Webers (the ones I've tried and liked anyway) are based on.
Unfortunately there really aren't many of them on this side of the pond!
I've got a mint C12R (which gets a bad rep). Too dark for the 5E3 but I'm looking forward to trying it in my 6L6GC based 5G9.

Don't feel bad Tommy, I have yet to hear an old Jensen and know it.

I had a set of four Eminence speakers called 12ALP's that were supposed to be a copy of old Jensens. P12's specifically I think. They sounded pretty radical--early breakup, very aggressive and loud--but I needed the $$$ for amps. It was worth it in the end.
