Champagne Gold (or Light Almond Pearl)

Here's a shot of my '57 clone that I'm doing w/a can or two of Dupli-color T367. I opened up the can, mixed it w/a little reducer in a mason jar, & put the contents into a jamb gun to spray. This is just a mock up before I put on any clearcoats:

Re: Champagne Gold (or Light Almond Pearl)

The saga is buried in the Clone Zone, lol.
It started life as an import Strat of unknown origin. I picked it up in a pawn shop for under $100. I fixed it up & sold it to a student of mine. Years later I bought it back from him & put a WD neck on it & it was so for a number of years. Here's a pic of me playing it at some festival in the mid '90s:

I first learned how to refret a neck on the original one & now it is whole again w/the original neck sporting 6105s. It has also been refinished in nitro & had the french curve reshaped. The WD neck fell by the wayside.
    It has been:
    2TSB
    Black
    White
    Dakota Red
    Desert Sand
    Teal Green
    Blue
    other forgotten shades
    & now Champagne Gold
The tuners are new Kluson style (Gotoh?)
The bridge is just a RI bridge w/the repro saddles I think may be from Crazy Parts.
All the electronics have been replaced w/vintage style stuff (switch, CTS pots, etc.) The p'ups are the Custom Shop '54s. Best p'ups for me! Although it has has had sets of RI, Texas Specials, Van Zants, & others in there.
The neck is BIG. A nice, rounded profile, kind of like what you'd find on a CS '56 Strat.

    Nice work.

Looks just about ideal against the hardwood floor too.

Geez, they's more paint on that body than wood!

Well, I'd say you got the situation well in hand now......it's got all the "goodies" it needs to be a pro axe.

Just for the record I strip it down to bare wood each time it gets a refinish, lol.
Here's a shot of it when it was Teal Green:

The other guitarist in my old band dubbed it the "Bastardcaster", & so it is. Last time I stripped it I also re-radiused the body & routed a little wood from the cavities to lighten it up a bit & remove some finish buildup in some hard-to-reach places.

Looked great in teal green, but that new color is beautiful.

Thanks for all the compliments! I still have to sand it w/some 1500, spray a couple coats of clear, buff it out, nick the flaws out w/an exacto knife, & then buff it again.

I'm so pissed right now I can't see straight. I went to put on a couple of touch up coats on this thing & my gun spit. The finish now needs to be wet sanded (SERIOUS wet sanding) & resprayed on the face. Not to mention I need to figure out what's up w/my gun.
    I hate metallics!

Re: Champagne Gold (or Light Almond Pearl)

Well, after cleaning my gun (again & again) I've determined that the needle was a little dirty, the needle seal was a little too tight, & I was putting the paint on too thick & too fast. A lot of little things that added up to a disaster. A quick search on the net told me that metallics should be sprayed on the "dry" side, so after sanding out the crap & splatters I put on a couple quick coats w/the valve barely open. Much better results. Nice, even, satiny looking coats!
I also read on the ReRanch site that metallics are best left unsanded before clearcoats. I'd agree w/that opinion.

How 'bout some more pics, General?

(you better believe, I'm takin' notes!)

As an aside, I keep a spare tip for my airbrush that I use solely when spraying metallics......another dedicated tip for clear lacquers. Saves on time when I hafta go immediately from color-coats (or metallics) to clear-coat sealers.

I'm guessin' that tips for hobby airbrushes (ie: a Paasche) are a bit cheeper than the pro-guns you guys use.

Pro gun? No pro gun here; this thingie was $45 at the local autopaint store. I tried to get some replacement felt for it a couple years ago & the guy laughed. "We haven't stocked those in YEARS. Besides, the replacement felt for a DeVillbiss probably cost more than you paid for that gun!"
I'll show off some more pics after Mon or Tues when I get some clear on it. Temps in the 80s! w00t!
I'd love to paint Chris' Strat but I think a vintage piece needs a name doing the work. Someone like Scott Lentz, Chris Mirabella, or Gord Miller has a little more presitige than "Some Guy I Met on the Internet Who Painted It in His Front Yard".

Okay, here's a shot of the body after a couple of coats of clear, the last of which had a "skosh" (as the kids say) of amber tint. I just put enough in the mix to give it a little more of a bronze look.

I don't know; I don't have any examples of Inca Silver around to compare. It's probably a little more brownish.

I always crack up a little at the guys who buy 9 Strats differentiated only by colour. But this is something new. You repaint the same guitar over and over. I am not sure what to think but it sounds like fun.
