    "Milonga" Strat

With the money from the sale of my "Mexican Bandit" burning a hole in my pocket I was a sucker when I saw this "Milonga Strat" on ebay. i checked this forum and could find very little on them but found info from other sources. Apparently only 250 were made, which in Fender terms, makes this a very limited run! Those that have them seem happy and it has all the features I wanted: Olympic white with gold fittings, rosewood fingerboard, modern neck etc. I had ordered an SX ash strat from Rondo Music with the intention of painting it white, buying gold fittings and decent pick ups and "making my own guitar". I think this makes more sense-what do you think:

I think it's sold (hope you were the buyer).

    Looks like a swell instrument.

As the happy owner of a 2006 or 2007 MIM Deluxe Series Strat, I can attest that's probably a very nice guitar.

    I guess I didn't make it clear did I? I am the buyer! :)

Is there such a thing as a 'Custom Shop' in the Mexico factory?

And, No, I am not gay!!

    Whaaa?! What brought that on?

I don't think there's a custom shop in the Mexico factory. This is probably a "factory special run" made in small numbers at the request of some retailer who wanted to be able to offer a special Strat people could only get from them.

With the gold-plated hardware, 12" radius, vintage-style tuners and bridge, and Vintage Noiseless pups, it looks like it's very similar to a Deluxe Player's Strat -- but without the 7-way switching, with an alder body instead of ash, and with the Olympic White finish that's not available on the Deluxe Player. Plus, of course, the fact that only 250 were made.

Congrats on winning the auction. That's a pretty guitar.

Sorry, I guess you had to read some of the feedback on "Other" Fender forums! The gold fittings, the pearlized board etc....

I guess I am being overly sensitive

    Oh! Heh.

Well, this board has grown men who count pink Strats and Hello Kitty Squiers among their arsenals, so I don't think you have to worry about that here. There also seems to be a general appreciation of white pearlized pickguards around these parts. I definitely think they look great on the right guitar.

(Plus, I don't think anyone around here would care if you were gay. It's a guitar board!)

    That's a 5E3 behind me, a modded Weber Revibe, a 6120AM, a 50th Anniversary Standard Strat, and a 12-String Strat, now owned by Rickenjangle.

The hat is NOT mine. It belongs to Donna, a fan, who placed it on my head.

Pink markers. The neck is really tiny on these things.

250 run? That's a hell of a buy. If you try really hard and find out who the other owners are, it's relatively simple to become the owner of a single such guitar in the world. Cheers, nice guitar. I've seen guitars far gayer than that one. And even than hello kitty squiers.

So, are these "Milonga" Strats the axe to have in Tango bands?

I wanted a Strat that was a little different-this thing seems to have all the features of high end models like the Clapton without the price.

It's a really weird name for a guitar they were selling in N.America isn't it? I think I will email Fender and ask them the background on this. Can anyone suggest a particular person there who is more responsive than others?

looks kind of like a cross between my deluxe player and my 2007 commemorative strat, with the pearl p/g off my surf green mexi strat thrown in for good measure...not that this would be a bad thing.most importantly does it play as good as i thinkk it would?

    Re: "Milonga" Strat

So, the guitar arrived today and despite UPSs best efforts is in great shape! Looks very nice-no marks, booklet and warranty info still in sealed plastic.
I took the neck off immediately-after my experience with my "Mexican Bandit" I have learned something. There is a date stamp of feb 2006 or 7 in the neck pocket which would be right and the number 76 in large felt marker on the neck--I wonder if that is the sequence number out of the 250?

I took the trem cover plate off and found a much larger trem block than was in my 2001 Mexican Standard but, it is not magnetic-should it be steel? The tremolo assembly appears to be the US model as it measures 2.250" between outside screw centres-I am told this is the way to check. The Mexican trems measure 2.125" apparently.

It sounds much better than the "Mexican Bandit" although I am too new a player to be able to judge-louder and more sustain is how I would describe it.

All in all, I am very happy with it!

    Re: "Milonga" Strat

Sounds like the bridge is the same as on the Deluxe Player (and presumably all the MIM Deluxe Series Strats); vintage-style, with six screws and 2.25" (technically 2 7/32") spacing. I don't know if that means the bridge is U.S. made, or if it's foreign-made to U.S. vintage specs. The trem block will be bigger in an MIM Deluxe than in an MIM Standard, but it is probably zinc. I just ordered a Callaham steel Vintage Repro block for my MIM Deluxe...hoping to see the kind of increase in overall mojo others say they've experienced with this upgrade.

    Re: "Milonga" Strat

All of the MIM trem blocks I have seen are pot metal (zinc). A steel one will give the guitar more chime and sustain but see my post elsewhere about installing a Fender-US trem block in a Taco-Caster bridge.

Glad to hear the guitar made the journey unscathed. Now plug it in an' play it reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaalllllly loud an' enjoy it.
