    overwound lindy fralins tele, heights?

    Hi all,

I know pickup heights are such a personal thing so please don't flame me.

I was just wondering for those of you who use the lindy fralin blues specials or overwounds on your Tele what do you find a good ball park height for them is?

I can play around with the bridge pickup fine but removing the neck, removing the pickguard etc to adjust the neck is a royal pain in the ass so if anyone has any advice that would be great. I know I could remove a bit of the guard to make adjustments easier but I really don't want to to be honest.

I am a LP player mostly so I think maybe I have my pickups too close. About 1.8mm on the treble side on both pickups and 2.2 on the bass.

These pickups sound amazing but there might be just that bit more of amazing I am missing out on.

    Thanks.

I can measure mine when I get home.

They're probably about 3mm from the treble strings (strings depressed at the 21st fret) and 3.5-4mm from the bass strings.

I suggest that you leave the pickguard off of the guitar for a couple of weeks, until you get everything the way you like it.

When it comes to Strats, I feel lower is better. Even with lower output pickups.

    This is a Tele.

    Lower is still often better.

You gotta try them in their whole range of adjustment, evne leaving them a height that you're not sure of for a few days.

Thanks, I think the idea of leaving off the guard for a while is a good one. I was going to do that when I first built the guitar but it looked so damn cool.

    I just measured mine.

They're both about 2.5mm [.100"] from the high E and a little over 3mm [.120"] from the low E with the strings depressed at the 21st fret.

I set the bridge pickup where I like it and then the neck pickups where the two pickups, combined, sound best.

On my Tele, I capo down the strings at about the 21st fret.....Then I set the pickups so the bass side is about 2 thicknesses of a nickel from the thick (low) E string and the treble side is about 1 nickel thickness from the thin (high) E string. I then adjust from there by ear with the pickguard off until I am satisfied. HTH, LB.

We don't have nickels in Australia :P. But I will take all that info in and get adjusting.

    Thanks guys.

FWIW, a US nickel is about the same thickness as a 10c piece.

A nickel is about 1.8mm thick.
