    Amp Stands?

I bought an amp stand.I dont know where i heard a debate as to the efficiency of an amp stand. Was it here? Some said they got more bass out of leaving their amp on the ground or near a corner. For me, it wouldnt really be that critical-that kind of talk is for mega-buck stereo speakers. I know Carvin is supoosed to make a good amp stand, but i got this Peavey amp stand off ebay.I Didn't do any comaprison shopping ,and i bought it outright.Ive never had any issues with Peavey pro-audio stuff. This amp stand will support my Carslbro combo.

Those are made by a company named QuikLok, I think, and a bunch of people put their name on them.

    They don't fold very compactly.

I've got one sitting in my basement now. The only time I've really used it is to make a "stack" out of my 5E3 and princeton. The princeton being on one of the Ultimate 150 stands, which is a lot shorter.

i recently became a big fan of amp stands
    mine is an 'ultra'
it's amazing how much i like it.
i've discovered my ears are in my head, not my ankles
    ankles suck in discerning tone.

    Re: Amp Stands?

I've been using milk crates and chairs as amp stands for a long time.
I like them a lot. A milk crate doubles as a bin to carry extra stuff.

I've never tried a commercial stand. Milk crates and chairs are free, although the milk crates have some pretty stiff penalties listed on them.

    Re: Amp Stands?

I have one HOOD and one Garelick Farms milk crate.
I didn't steal them myself. My sister had them and she got them from someone else.
I've had them for about 25 years.

The ones that they sell at the store are garbage. They sag and take a set if you put any load on them at all.

Well the nice thing about a tilt back stand is that it
    1. ensures nobody puts a drink on my amp
    2. ensures that my e906 lies flat on the grillcloth

    1. My drink is always on my amp (considering the amount of drinks that I've seen spilled on stages, that might not be such a great idea)

I have a similar thing and to be honest found it a pain in the whatsit taking it to gigs. Takes up too much room in the boot (trunk) and I found the only place I could put it was behind the drivers seat. Now just use whatever is in the place, a chair or usually a beer crate

Mine does sometimes, but I loop the cord around the handle to keep it in place, and sometimes it gives the cable a bit of a twist that makes the mic lift up a bit.

I loop the cable on mine around the handle too.

I pass the cord through the center of the handle with the mike end of the cord passing under the end of the handle outside of the handle's mounting bracket. That way the mic is nearer the edge of the speaker cone than the center.

If the mic doesn't want to lay flat, I rotate the cord in the handle until it sits the way I want it to.

I use a pro Jr. as a backup and it serves double duty as an amp stand.

I've got these really sturdy record crates that I've been using for years when I play out.

I'll be using my lopo signature cab to get my amp up off the ground if the damn thing ever arrives!

    Re: Amp Stands?

I always used milkcrates on gigs until I bought an extension cab. My amps still sit on crates in storage in my basement. I had a flood a couple of years ago and I am paranoid it can/will happen again. I hate the fact that amps on stands point right at my head. I like to hear the rest of the band also.

    Re: Amp Stands?

One advantage to tilt-back stands: controlled feedback with a hollowbody. One of the tunes we're covering is Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, and getting the sustain is hit-or-miss if you can't stand within the cone-of-non-silence.

    Re: Amp Stands?

Don, you should get a banner made with your band's name, and then tuck it under the front of the amp to cover those unsightly milk crates. Everyone knows that Hood milk crates give poor tone. All the most discerning tonefiends will laugh at your rig.

Just kiddin'. Though the banner idea WOULD be cool...

    Re: Amp Stands?

A HOOD crate alone would not give the best tone. They lack punch due to their open design.
However, combined with the semi-open Garelick Farms crate, the balance is pretty great!

I had a Garelick, but not one of the rare green ones like Don's (mine was the more common "Blue Moo"). Great low end. Then the girl I lived with then used it to take her records to her mom's place when she moved out.

I wonder if milk crate theft rates dropped as CDs became popular?

    Re: Amp Stands?

I have one of those stands similar to the one pictured in the ebay link. I think I got it from MF. it's adequate for most purposes, but it is just more crap to tote along with you to a gig. However, they do have their uses.
Mine is sitting next to my computer desk with a PodXT Live propped up on it. There's a piece of 2X4 under the back that puts it at a nice angle for viewing, and I hit the footswitches with my elbow when I'm playing/recording sitting down.

I too, usually use the fezz method. One less thing to haul around.

    Re: Amp Stands?

and I set it up today. I dont know why i didnt realise the treble notes would be blasting right into my ears. I don't think I like that. Ice-pick! . I might take it to the vice and try and bend the forks down some.

    Re: Amp Stands?

That means your treble is turned up too high, dude. If that's what you hear with the amp pointed at your skull, then that's what a microphone picks up at a gig and that's what the audience hears through the P.A.

Unless you're not being mic'd, in that situation it's actually preferable to have the treble set a little higher so that the amp cuts through the mix a little better. Even that depends on the venue though. And YMMV of course.

My amp stand is a tripod type with adjustable angle. I like it aimed right at my head, you can hear the detail and articulation of not only the amp's tone but what you're playing as well. When I crank it up, though, I generally stand back a little...

    Re: Amp Stands?

well, I dont play out , i am a studio musician..er sort of -i bought Sony Acid anyway, and i looked around and i noticed none of my 12 other amps were pointed directly at my face, and I am guessing theres a good reason for that. I agree with the getting the amp up off the floor tho,So, I think someone needs to invent an adjustable amp-stand that will put the amp at a very slight tilt, like a MArshall 1960A top 2 speakers, or, i think Im going to use the steel chair! EDIT_ or i just thought of this..i could turn the amp around on the amp stand and crank away, but it would be pretty inconvinient adjusting the. controls

    Re: Amp Stands?

    Yeah, that's what I have:

The rear leg has an adjustment on it for 3 different angles, I like the middle setting. The top is threaded for a gooseneck mic stand, but I've never used it. I just wrap a towel around it so it won't dig into the tolex on the back of the amp and away I go.
