    Intonation Issues - Squier 51 - Help!

I have a blonde Squier 51 that I recieved as a Christmas gift from my wife. It's a fun little guitar but I'm having intonation problems. I've set the intonation and I'll tune it with a tuner and it still sounds off when I play further up the neck.

It has been suggested to me that I should order a better bridge.

I know lots of guys who have bought and modded the 51's but I really have not heard bridge complaints.

Have you had intonation issues with a 51?
    What would you do next?

    Thanks,
    John

The first thing I'd look at is the nut. If a nut isn't cut well, it causes all kinds of problems.

Have you tried adjusting the string lengths on the bridge?

I've set the string lengths properly at the bridge. I'm good at doing that. The problem is somewhere else.

How do you check for nut accuracy or a proper cut?

Does anyone have a link to a site with inspection how-to tips?

    THANKS!

Yep, the slots on my 51 were too shallow. You could clean up the existing nut, or replace it altogether (mine's in pieces at the moment, until I get around to it).

If you do decide to swap the bridge out, I highly recommend the one that GFS sells. $12 gets you a much better quality bridge.

    Here is one site...

One easy check that I do is to push down behind the 1st fret (like you're making an F on the low E string). Then look at the distance between the string and the second fret. Then remove your finger and look at the distance between the first fret and the string (unfretted). It should be about the same.

Thanks. I'm away from home on business. I'll check right away when I get home.

    It's a neat little guitar.
