Which Guitar Sounds Closest to a Jazzmaster?

I'm sure the answer is none of the above...but I'm curious. Never owned a Jazzmaster, but I do own a '52 reissue Tele, Clapton Strat, 57 Historic Les Paul, Single cut Historic Les Paul Special, and a double cut Historic LP Junior. Any of those come close to Jazzmaster tones?

Maybe the LP Jr. Does it have P90s? Then probably that.
If you can you should try a Jazzmaster, they're very cool guitars.

Jazzmaster pickups only look like P90's, sort-of. Jazzmasters don't sound anything like a LPJr. They're sorta ploinky and doinky, when looked at in a derrogatory sense, but useful when clean for surf. The vibrato is nice and shimmery, but can't handle more than bigsby-style dips.

Vince has a few of them. He could tell you more.

I wouldn't think any of the ones you listed sound like a Jazzmaster. As Kap'n stated, they have a sound all their own. Most people don't like them because they're sort of jangly, kind of a cross between a Rick and a Strat. Leo missed the Jazz mark pretty wide on this one, but the Surf genre jumped on them with both feet. They are very cool guitars.

Yep, JMs are a completely different beast, as are Jags.

The Jazzmaster PUs are nothing like P90s. Instead, they are warm, smooth, and clean. You can twang with them, play blues with them, obviously you can surf with them. Physically, they are like a Strat PU that has been squashed flat and wide.

The Jaguar PUs are very similar to Strat PUs in physical shape and performance. However, that metal shielding and the circuit design helps add a bit of extra punch to the tone.

I think my favorite Fender guitars now are Jazzmasters. I have three of them: 2 AVRIs and 1 Warmoth clone as well as 2 AVRI Jaguars.

The clapton strat has that tone in there somewhere.... I'd love to give the exact setting, but I've not played a Jazzmaster in so long.

AFAIK...The Jazzmaster has a little more pronoucned mids than a strat, but not as much bass or overall brightness. Not as focused a sound as a typical strat, very open sounding, more of a les-paul type chime than a tele twang.

I'd guess for a ballpark sound...Clapton strat, neck pup, volume on 6, tbx 7 on the dial, and mid boost 6 on the dial...

You could go with a Wilson Bros. VM110. They're based on a Jazzmaster although the body looks more like a Mosrite. The pickups aren't quite the same as a JM but they're not as hot as the Mosrite p'ups. It's not a true JM sound but it get a lot closer than most other models.

You'll have to do a search. I can say no more.
