I prefer rosewood. It feels nicer. If there was a guitar I really wanted that only came with a maple fretboard, though (like a handful of nice Fenders), I don't think I'd have any trouble with it.

There's a minute difference in tone between the two woods, but it's mostly looks.
I like sunburst! ash no maybe alder then again mahogany has some sweet mids and lows, basswood or poplar make some fine tone woods too.... I gotta go poop now I'll let you know if its rosewood or maple...
YAWN!
Rosewood! Its like dark chocolate.. Maples kinda runny..
Fezz, please rescue us!!!
...and on the 8th day, God created the Super Reverb and there was ROCK, and it was GOOD!
Why? You're all big boys and girls. How about don't get drawn in if you're going to get upset about the most ridiculous recurring debate in all of guitardom?
And rosewood sucks, but not as much as maple, although maybe a little more. Which is why I love both. And ebony. And pao ferro. But not rosewood or maple.
Just kidding, PC! I haven't allowed myself to get drawn in since I spent time in the penalty box. I'm cool with that and just here for fun and the knowledge. 'Sall Goof?

and I was thinking everyone understood the humor....
do I look like I know what I'm doing?
Just go with whatever's least poplar.

Ebony's great. I used to have a subscription.
I prefer synthetics.

Things to make them fuzzy
Things to make them louder
orange picks

leaves you kinda soft and pliable

If we eliminated every thread you could say that about, this board would have one new post a week. And some of the most interesting threads would be gone.
I have to believe you knew what the thread was about when you read the subject line. If you think it's a waste of time, why not skip the thread and go on to something you find interesting?
NO!!!!1!
How'd I get dragged into this again? I was just kidding guys...Sorry.

Ok man, it's cool!

So, is now a bad time to ask about the tone you get from carbon fiber?
I prefer playing my maple Strat but that may be because it's my 'dream' one (ie Gilmourised). My Squier neck is fantastic too however.
Just ordered an Epi SG which will be rosewood.
Nothing's forgotten...nothing is ever forgotten

JT1, I think the one on the right sounds better.
Oh wait, it's a Squier...I must've been hearing the one on the left...

Why aren't more electrics' fretboards made with ebony? Is it too expensive? I loved the ebony board on my old LP Custom, but overall I think I still like rosewood better.
Maple? Rosewood? Where have you guys been!?!?!? The in thing now is Pau Ferro!!!!! *hyuk hyuk*!
Just kidding. I like 'em both... But I'm more partial to maple gos it's nicer... (especially when there's flame on it... know what I mean???)
Rosewood for me, I love the feel and the look, although, have played some nice maple boards too! I just prefer a rosewood fretboard.

I'd always been Rosewood for the last 25 yr., save for the Ebony board I have on my Carvin. Just got a Maple board Strat a couple weeks ago and I have this feeling, like , =floorburn= when playing the Maple, and actually the Ebony too. My fingers are like a rhino's skin but there's something funny about that maple. Like my fingers have spent an hour dragging along a hardwood basketball court !
Wellll... I'm actually in the final stages of assembling a tele for a friend, and the board is pau ferro. It's really stunning, visually -- this particular board is nicer than any rosewood boards I own, for sure.
I'll post pics when I get it done (and I'll submit a full tone report, replete with nitpicky this wood vs. that wood details)

John Mayer and Eric Clapton were on Good Morning America this morning playing Crossroads. Both were using a Limited Edition Eric Clapton Atiqua Stratocaster. John's had a rosewood neck and Eric's had the standard maple neck.
Although both were playing through different amps, one could hear a distict sound difference between the two. The rosewood neck provides a richer more mellow sound where the maple neck provides a thinner more biting sound.
I apprecate both types of necks (and own both types) but if I had to choose, I would choose the maple neck.
What do you mean by "Although?" "Even though they were completely different musicians playing through two completely different amps, you could still hear a slight difference in tone, which I attribute to the fretboard material."
I think what you were hearing was the difference between John Mayer and Eric Clapton, not the difference between rosewood and maple.
I'd suspect the fact that two different guys were playing through two different amps had as much to do with the tonal differences as the fretboard materials. There's also pickup settings, volume and tone knob settings....
(jim beat me to it. )
Come on guys, everything effects tone from the fingers to the listeners ear. I have become convinced that if all things are equal a maple board is a bit brighter. The differences are negligible and I would suggest if John Mayer and Eric Clapton switched rigs, John would still sound like John and Eric like Eric with just mild differences in their usual tone. I carry 3 guitars on a gig; a maple board strat, a rosewood board strat and a Gibson SG. All sound different and all sound like me. Not bad when considering they are all tuned differently.
