    What guitar is this?

    hi everyone!

didn't quite know where to ask this question but i happened to find this video of Joy Devision on youtube that showed Ian Curtis playing on a pretty special looking guitar, at least for me. I hope that one of you will take the time to just look at the video and be able to tell me what guitar that is.

    thanks

Vox put out guitars like that in the 60's. Someone may be making a knockoff today but I wouldn't know who. Perhaps Airline. Anyone else?

    Looks like a Vox Phantom.

Phantom guitars made one a bit ago, but I have no idea whether they're still in biz.

check out eastwood guitars out of canada if you like those odd vintage guitars. they make newer look-alike versions.

    Total Vox.

See similar guitars in late 70s-early 80s Tom Petty videos too.

On YouTube "Here Comes My Girl" Petty plays the teardrop shape.

    Apparently so.

In the last Tom Petty interview I read, he seemed pretty into his 12-string. I believe his was an orignal Vox one.

That is a VOX Phantom XII. The Phantom Guitar Works repros (which are much better instuments) do not have the metal knobs, they use skirted knobs similar to a Fender amp. I've been playing the PGW 6 string Phantom for awhile now, and it is a great guitar. Sounds and plays great and has a wonderful stage presence. The PGW axes are wonderful peices. Mine is box stock and rips.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's the 6-string version.

Obviously not one of the Phantom Guitar Co. "reissues" since Ian was probably dead a decade before those were made.

I liked Joy Division. New Order never did anything for me.

You are correct. The XII had a different headstock shape. I mistook the logo for a second set of tuners!
