    help me build a strat....?

hey, I have a strat pickguard loaded with Fralin vintage hots

and a body from a MIM strat, it's purplish & looks '50's style, not the 2 post bridge

what do you think I should do?

get a cheap used MIM neck somewhere?

or sell the body & get a warmoth neck & crtazywood new body?

I was also thinking of stripping the MIM body down & dragging it behind the car or something...make it look "rory" style

not quite sure WTF to do with this combination....any ideas?

    thx!

Sell the MIM body and get what you want.

Do you like the body? If so, keep it. I've got a Midnight Wine MIM-bodied frankenstrat that put together that I really like. It plays and sounds great. If you don't like it, though, there are lots of other options out there.

As to the neck, I'd highly recommend either a Warmoth or a USA Custom. I've built guitars with both, and they both do great work. Much better than a MIM neck, IMO.

The Rory idea is interesting, but dragging the body behind a car might remove more than you want.

Rory's guitar got to look the way it did because it got left in a wet ditch for several days after being stolen. Any other form of relicing apart from the ISO9001 "Irish wet ditch technique" would be inauthentic.

However, you might find that the poly finish on a MIM laughs in the face of a wet ditch, unlike its wimpier nitro coated forebears.

so if you cahnge the body and the neck, change the electronic, then it not a strat no more. just a clone.

I have built a couple. One very recently. I think I got lucky - it sounds good but I used top of the line components.

After this experience I say find a store with a bunch of guitars, find the model you really dig and try a bunch of those and pick the cream of the crop.

Sell the parts and then hang out here and see what you can tweak......if any.

For me (last ordeal was my American Standard neck, Warmoth body, Wilkinson VSVG and Lindy Fralin guard assembly from Callaham), a 62 AVRI with the Callaham assembly would have done the job and maybe better. You can sell AVRI pickguards for good money on fleabay......

    thx all

I think I'll pick up a neck on ebay, seems the cheapest option & fastest way to get it running

bummer, I could have gotten a '59 strat neck for $200 about a year ago

Get your Fender products here: http://stores.ebay.com/The-STRATosphere

And no, I have no reationship with the vendor. Just a good place to get some Fender parts.
