Hot Rod Deluxe Pilot Light Flickers on Standby

As stated above, the pilot light on my HRD flickers & varies in intensity when the amp is in Standby mode. Bumping & thumping the amp seems to make it vary, but it does not make it stop. The light comes on full brightness & stays there when it is switched ON, it only does this when in STANDBY mode.

Should I be concerned? The amp sounds good & seems fine otherwise.

    Thanks,
    The Kirbster

It is just a light bulb in there.

Try putting a new one in and see if it goes away. As long as the amp's sound hasn't changed, and there's no other symptoms (red plating tubes, smoke, fire..), then I wouldn't worry.

Sounds like the bulb is fine, if it works normally in play mode.

Maybe a loose wire, or, more likely, a bad solder joint which the HR series seems to be famous for.

remove the bulb, take needle nose pliers and squeez the base a little to make a tighter fit, put the bulb back in

With the amp unplugged, of course.

My recollection on reading about theses amps is that they are notorious for jewel light probs (nothing mnore serious than burning out, which doesn't affect anything else). get some replacement bulbs and carry them in your gig bag.

The bulb works fine during normal operation--it just goes screwy when I put the amp on Standby. I don't think it's the bulb, or it would be screwy all the time!

If it was just the bulb, seems to me that it would flicker WORSE when the amp was on & being played due to vibration from the speaker.

Open the back of the amp, turn it on with the amp in standby and use a chop stick to tap on the 2 white rectangular 5 watt resistors on the board. If this affects your pilot light, then the solder joints on those resistors need touching up. You may notice that there are some brown spots around where those resistors are soldered to the board and that would indicate a bad solder joint.
