what is the best among other brands?
If you want a guitar with three single coils under $800, I don't see any reason to buy anything but a Fender Stratocaster. The new MIM 50's Player's things are real nice, just right at $800, and there are lots of great choices for less.
At that price, why buy a copy?
just checking for alternatives... and, i like something flatter than the 7,25" radius of the Classic Players
Sounds to me like you might want a Carvin Bolt. The only problem with them is the back of the neck is a little too flat for my taste. But it has a really flat radius neck and any p'up combo you'd like...
There is also the
REVEREND- Jetstream 390
Malden- utopia
Eastwood- Red Special
And last but not least, The Teisco Spectrum 5

Porto, the Classic Player's have a 9.5 radius.
So does the very popular Jimmy Vaughn, the Highway One's, the MIM Standards, and the Deluxe Player's have a 12" radius.
PRS SE 12" radius. About $400.

I would go for a G&L they make a strat style guitar priced at or around $400.00. Also the Standard Strats can be had for about that price new.
Jim, you're right for the classic players (50s=9,5"/60s=12"). I already own the Deluxe players, which i like, though i had to switch the bridge saddles and the tuners. Also, it's volume pot is bad right from the box. Anyway these are not big things to consider...
As for the other suggestions, to my knowledge these are all models Made In Korea and i'm pretty disappointed of the instruments that make there. I'm not a rascist, but i think their QC is pretty low. Plus, i HATE plastic nuts, which are called 'graphite' (a big trouble to switch them off). Especially for the PRS, it's bridge can't be fixed for intonation, isn't it?
While I think the actual Fender Strats are the best choice in a 3-SC guitar, I own a PRS SE and I can tell you there is NO quality problem with it at all. The wrap bridge sounds great and intonates very well (better than Gibson in my experience), and while the plastic nut (which they don't call graphite, BTW) will probably need some work, everything else about these guitars is excellent for the price.
But I don't think that the general "unplugged" sound of my Soapbar II would work as well with Strat pickups as it does with the P-90-style pickups it sports. Just one guy's opinion, likely worthless...
Did they ever make these things with three pickups?

You think Korean QC is bad? Man, you need to try a Gretsch 5120.
Outstanding. Easily the best guitar I own.

maybe the Gretsch is fine... but what about your Fender Lite Ash Tele?
i own a Fender TC90 and a Tradition JR Pro. I also owned an Epiphone LP and many friends of mine have MIK el. guitars (Fender, Cort, ESP, Ibanez). Almost all of them have bad QC issues.
My Ibanez is just fine, save for the mediocre p'ups. Then again, it was made in China.

don't get me wrong, i'm not saying all the MIKs are garbage... But with so many bad guitars, i'm afraid of getting one. Take for example my TC90: when i got it, the frets were uneven, the volume pot was scratchy, the bridge pup (Seymour Duncan SP90-3) couldn't read the high E and the B strings, the nut was black plastic (when i changed the strings to 10's they got stucked in it) and the jack was broken. So, the dealer said that it's just the way the pickup was made and it was out of the guarantee to repair it. I took the guitar to a tech who filed the frets and changed the nut with a bone. Then i changed the pup and i put a Haeussell P90 A5 Hot. The guitar itself and all these upgrades they cost me 900euros... If i had saved that money, easily i could buy a Fender USA Strat or Tele, don't u think so? And the worst of all, is that comparing to my other guitars i can't play properly that thing, so i thing that it will be my next sale.
... Sorry for the long story, guys...
I have a MIK DeArmond that's extremely well made.
I had a MIK Samick jazzbox that was too.
Honestly, I don't know what the nuts are made of.
But they work.
Can you buy a guitar in that price range with a bone nut?
I'm not sure.
If there's a general thing about many (not all) MIK guitars, it's the tendency toward excessive (no doubt CNC produced) inlay and pearly crap, and thck thick finishes.
Just silly levels of flash on bargain priced guitars.
Yup.
But they had mini-HB's, and were called Crestwoods, or Wilshires, or maybe even Olympics...

It's hard to keep the names straight.
But the fancy ones seem to usually be Crestwoods and Wilshires.
Some had symetrical horns, some asymetrical.
Some had "Batwing" headstocks, some had 3+3 headstocks.
The old single P90 Coronets are very cool guitars.
Pretty damn spendy these days.
The more recent MIK Coronets are more generic, 2-HB guitars, that happened to be shaped like the Crest-shire-lympics.

I like the low end PRS's, also Godin makes some cool ones. Ibanez makes some nice ones also. I think Fender might make something like that also, but I'm not sure...

Man, I think those are just some of the prettiest epiphones they evah made. Thanks for the link, it's hard to find information about those things. They should really bring them back bigtime... just anything to bring the price down but not compromise quality. Or Eastwood could make some kind of lawsuit rip off...
I like the smaller headstock of the wilshire. If I ever make my own neck, I'm totally copying it.
Oh man, I just found this 12 on ebay.

ok... u're all very helpful here.
No matter the country of origin, most of all from your propositions i like the PRS SE-EG (with SSS configuration and floating bridge) and the Godin Triumph (to me its pickups look like mini humbuckers size). Does anybody have played a Schecter Hellcat?
Not to hijack, but you guys are killing me with those Epi pics (drool).
If you want non Fender for under $800,build one from from parts and shop carefully.
