    Squier 51 scratchplate

    Bought a Squier 51, really nice sounding guitar and a great concept. I'm getting a replacement neck pickup - one with proper magnets for pole pieces not just plated steel slubs.

    The only other thing I'm not keen on is the vulgar, bright white scratchplate. Does anyone know of a supplier of 'drop in' replacement scratchplates for this guitar? I don't want to make my own.

    Have you got some more info - a working link - I can never get searches to work for me! For example, this one just led back to here!

    Thanks Frank, but neither of those work, I get;

    Safari can’t open the page “http://www.instituteofnoise.com/squi...m/default.asp” because it can’t find the server “www.instituteofnoise.com”.

    I realise it's probably all interesting stuff - and I'd definitely like to read it - but for now, is anyone making retrofit, alternative scratchplates for these Squier 51s? Cheers.

    Assuming those links aren't going to work for me, can someone just tell me, can you buy replacement plates or not? If so, from where. Thanks.

    Try pickguardian.com. Last time I went there, he had a whole page on 51 pickguards.

    Thanks for that. I've just looked on the website and you're right, there are references to the Squier 51 plate. However, from what I can gather they've had problems with them not being standard or something like that, so that page you refer to is now not avaliable. But anyway, I've tried to call them and I'll keep trying. We're getting there..... !

    Frank you're right, I just spoke to Tony at Pickguardian and he says he does not stock them anymore cos he's seen at least a dozen variations in terms of mounting screws, control plate, and neck pocket variations! Even if he sent me one with no holes in it, the chances are that the control plate and neck pocket would be wrong.

    Anyway, I'm sending him mine (from the UK) and he's gonna clone it. I'm probably gonna have cream pearloid. Cost is $60 plus shipping.

    Thanks to everyone for the input, and I'll keep you guys posted.

    I've got the sunburst 51. I'm also gonna sand down the Squier name and put a nice vintage Fender one there instead. Well it's a Fender after all!!!

    Re: Squier 51 scratchplate

    My scratchplate arrived from Tony at Pickguardian. I'm really pleased with the results. I also dropped in a Kent Armstrong vintage strat pickup instead of the ceramic bar wonder that came with it. I've done a complete setup from end to end, including tightening all the loose screws, fret dress (including those sharp edges!), intonation, nut grooves lowered, 9 to 48 strings, and I rolled the edges of the fingerboard using the side of a chrome screwdriver blade (the round shaft) to compress and 'round' the edge of the board. It's more like a guitar costing around £400 now, not £130. Oh yes, and I put a nice old style Fender transfer on the headstock instead of the Squier one.

    FYI, I had to send Tony my old guard for him to clone it sizewise etc. It's a perfect fit; no misalignment of holes or cutouts anywhere.
