    mark hoppus

It was cheap, so I have another bass I won't use much. Appears to be mex standard P neck, J body with one seymour duncan P pickup.
    no tone control....
I de-munged it, changed strings, setup & intonnated - Impressive.
I have used J basses for ever, the neck will take some getting used to. Very punchy, much more resonate than my others.

    light blue, if that matters

    Re: mark hoppus

    Is the build quality OK?

I ask, because the only time I ever looked at these was at a Guitar Center one-day sale when they were $333.33 (yes, these were the MIM Fenders). The build quality was so lousy on these that they only sold one even at that price. They were the greenish ones, which may also have had something to do with it. The other two are probably still there to this day. Bassists seem to hate the Hoppus for reasons which to me seem to me to be non-rational. Fender's concept of a MIM bass with a high-quality aftermarket pickup seems like a valid one to me, I just can't find one that's built well. Same with the Dirnt.

QC is all over the place with MIM stuff. About 20% is really good, about 25% is really defective and the rest wanders around in the middle somewhere. Sad.

it was filthy, I cleaned it up and did not see any glaring errors.
The neck pocket is tight, the rest seems fine but I did not give it the anal-retentive check over, it plays and sounds nice... still struggling with the 'daphney blue' - seems slightly anti-masculine

But... I buy 'em to play or resell, not to fawn over

OK, so it was used, I guess.

I did not give it the anal-retentive check over
I'm seeing a lot of really terrible fret problems these days, particularly frets that aren't fully seated, which is really a fatal fault that results from the semi-mechanized way they're currently doing fretboards. It's too complicated to explain. If I see a gap between the fret shoulder and the wood, I'm done, it's a deal-killer. These frets can't be seated and the axe should never have left the factory. Keep an eye out for this when you're goofing around in Guitar Center checking out the stock.

This problem is not limited to MIM Fenders. I see it everywhere these days. Disgusting!

The problems I saw on those particular basses were also the typical drippy finish and poor assembly seen on too many MIMs.

still struggling with the 'daphney blue' - seems slightly anti-masculine
The Daphne Blue is about as bad as the Surf Green, and the MOTO pickguards certainly don't help. The ones in plain black and Olympic White with black pickguards are a lot less...uh...offensive. I think these came later.

But... I buy 'em to play or resell, not to fawn over
OK, makes sense. If you can flip it at a profit, that's a good axe.

Well I think it's really cool. I don't play bass but I could get one of them cheap i'd jump on it and i'd learn.

    Re: mark hoppus

That is a pretty cool looking bass. I'd play it, but I would really be missing that tone control. I think that guy (Hoppus) probably just never saw the need for it.

I happen to like sonic and daphne blue. They're not emasculating, just think of them as an ironic contrast to your obvious masculinity.

I just bought a sonic blue strat, wanted one for years. Zeiss, tell her you're at least half as manly as me, she should be impressed.

I love the idea behind the Dirnt- if that had a 1.5" nut...

A lot of hate towards the Hoppus Bass has to do with Hoppus himself. He is what he is- he's no virtuoso, but he's good at what he's doing. For all the bitching you see about Hoppus and Blink182, most of it's about the big green monster.

I'm not a Blink 182 fan in the least.

I though the Hoppus had a J-size neck.
    ??
I played one last week- felt pretty good.
I'm not a bass player, so the slimmer neck is appealing.
I think I've concluded that I prefer the J neck to the P.
But I think I prefer the sound of the P bass over all.

    Cool, sensitive blue bass.

P-Bass neck, J-Bass body (bass ackward from a special)
one high-output SD pickup. I am getting used to the feel, I will get the verdict from the rest of the "anal-retentive gear snobs" on Thursday
As of today, I am rather impressed with the instrument - further enhanced by the price (which I almost feel guilty about)

Naah, it's just another mix of parts. Sounds OK, as long as the sig isn't too big. Then again, I'm not a bass player.

Now, the Tom DeLonge 335. That's stupid. And ugly.

Well, it has met the gear snob(s) approval. The color and neck (compared to a jazz neck) took a little getting used to.

Run through a GK backline 110, into an Eden Nemesis 2x10
with a 2x15 extention. (You gotta 'feel' the bass)

there is no signature on the hoppus, just "Mark Hoppus" engraved in the Neck Plate

A lot of people hate on the hoppus but for no reason, I can say on a bass that I've never had to use the tone knob.... I just stick with an EQ setting and go. But that's just me.

Yes and yes. God Almighty, this might sound weird, but I actually got angry when I saw that guitar the first time.
