Question About 5E7 Bandmaster or 5F4 Super

Is anyone using Weber transformers in these amps? If so, do the output transformers sound good?

    Thanks,
    Ken

I've got the Weber transformers in mine (5E7), and think it sounds pretty damn cool.

I don't have a lot of real 5E7s to compare it too.

Thanks Kap'n, I trust your opinion. I'm thinking about building one of these amps sometime in the future. Is 3 speakers versus 2 speakers the only difference between these two amps?

    Not exactly.

There's a local negative feedback loop in the preamp. The bandmaster has a 10 megohm resistor, the super has a 4.7 megohm, or twice the negative feedback. I've got the 10 in mine, but thinking of going with the lower value.

On the originals, the output transformers are different too, as I understand it.

    Oh, also....

Don't use a 12AX7 in the first postion. It'll be pretty muddy, and the amp's volume control will be kinda useless.

    Use a 5751, or better yet, a 12AY7.

NOS GE 6072/12AY7 sounds great in my Weber 5E5A. Same amp as a 5E7/5F4 except for the speakers and R34, the negetive feedback resistor feeding the PI. Same local feedback as the 5F4.
I have a Weber W404248 in a homebrew 3X10 5E3. That amp has had an MM 2.6 ohm Bandmaster tranny in it. The MM has some qualities that the Weber doesn't but I actually like the Weber better.

Rockin'Daddy, I found that a NOS JAN GE 6072 in V1 was excellent in my 5e3x2 "Double Deluxe" too. Very sweet tube.

    I'm using Weber 10A125's in my 5E7.

The 12AY7 is a Tung Sol I bought cheaply out the back door of New Sensor fifteen years ago, because I knew I would need it someday.

    It hasn't disappointed.
