    "Floating" truss rod?

I just bought a Vester Tele copy. It looks great and seems (or seemed ) to have the potential to become really good with a little tweaking and new p'ups.

However, when I took it apart I discovered that the truss rod is loose! With the nut untightened, by holding the nut (situated bottom, vintage style) it's possible to pull the rod out almost an inch and back again.

Strange thing is that the truss rod seems to work. It tightens just fine and the neck backbows like it should. And it doesn't seem to matter in what position the truss rod is, all the way in or all the way out or in between.

Has anybody experienced this? Is there a trusss rod construction that I wasn't aware of?

The rod isn't going anywhere, because it sits in the neck pocket, so the is no problem. If it bends, (it's the type thats made out of two strips of metal so you can still turn the nut and increase the tension without the rod itself turning). It has no anchor at the and so it can slide out if the neck is straight.

Ignore it, it is not a problem. With the right setup (neck bent a little) it will stay in place and won't rattle.

    Thanks G.g.!
I was just starting to think in that direction. I have never had a guitar with this sort of trussrod before, so the idea of an ancored truss rod was so to speak rather heavily ancored in my mind.

The square shape of the rod prevents it from turning inside the neck. It also possible it is a round rod in a U-profile, in a straight channel.

Same problem when the neck is straight, but under presure no problems anymore.
