I had a mid 80s MIJ STrat that made of basswood that was one of the most responsive guitars I've owned, and a early 90s basswood MIJ Tele remins the best sounding Telecaster I have EVER picked up, bar none.

The "conventional wisdom" that basswood "sounds" bad has been created in much the same way the concept of "vintage" Strats has been created.
