Have any of you tried a Mike Dirnt P-bass?

I'm not a bass player.
I'm casually eyeballing basses.
Just something decent, not too spendy, to have around as a writing tool, really.

Don't laugh, but I really dig the look of the (discont'd) Mark Hoppus model too. J-bass body w/a P-p'up and neck.
They seem to be fairly cheap used.

I think they look pretty cool, and probably play/sound decent. I probably wouldn't buy either one new, but used, they probably make decent instruments at their price.

I'd bet the Hoppus bass drops a greater percentage on the used market.

They probably get dropped more often too.

A pink Hoppus with a blank neckplate would be neat.
But they have some kind of hot quater pounder p'up.
I'm not sure if that would matter for me though.

A long time ago I had spec'ed out my dream bass, and it came out a lot like the Dirnt sig- except for it having a 1.5" nut and a single coil P pickup.

Looking back it wasn't all that "unique" or anything- just a 54-57 contoured P body, rosewood fingerboard, decent bridge, 1.5" nut and Tele headstock... All you need for rock...

I noodled around with one for a few minutes on my lunch break.

Positives:

1. Very nice neck shape. Chunky, but not overly so. Not Jazz bass narrow, but it didn't feel as wide as the average P-bass either.

2. Body contours. The added comfort was very noticeable compared to the similar reissue with the single coil pickup and no contours.

3. Frets. Looked better than most others in the same price range.

4. Cosmetics. It looks pretty cool.

5. No visible signature. It may be on there, but I didn't notice it. There was a small star on the neckplate. That was all. Groovy.

Negatives:

FWIW, I didn't plug it in. I'm sure it sounds like a P-bass, which is good enough for me.

Neo, my old friend Gary owns THREE Hoppus basses, all bought used, differnet pups in each one, he loves them to death. I've played them and they're all cool. Hangs like a Jazz, sounds like a P-Bass.

Gary is the proud owner of an authentic '65 Jazz (I know it's real because I helped him become its second owner in 1972 when it was worthless) and he says his Hoppus models feel and ring out just as good as the vintage.

have these been around for a while? I am also casually thinking of getting a bass again. Something like the dirnt might be perfect.

I don't have the Dirnt model but I thought about that one when I bought my bass... I bought one of the 51 P-Basses that look a lot like the Dirnt model but with the old style single coil pickup. I love the vibe of the bass, but I'm thinking about putting a little hotter pickup in it to give it a little fuller tone. It's got a nice chunky neck and I like the translucent butterscotch color. I chose the 51 P-bass mostly for it's looks, and I got mine used for a pretty good price. The custom shop Pbass pickup in the Dirnt sure was appealing though.

I really like the early P-bass look too, and the Dirnt's features are very appealing.
I'm in no hurry to grab anything.
Unless a ridiculous bargain falls in my lap, or I see a headstock poking out of a dumpster.
But I'm leaning toward the Hoppus, mainly because they seem to be going for quite a bit less, while still being a quality Fender bass.
My non-bassplaying skill-set like the idea of a little slimmer neck too.
Plus, say what you want about Blink92, it's cool looking thing.
