Re: Who had/has the best Strat tone?

I don't really get the Chilli Peppers.

But I've been taking notice of John Frusciante a lot lately.
Not just his tone, (which seems pretty Hendrixy -at least on solos), but his whole approach. His rhythm playing can really be madness.

With a guy like this, you can't just zero in on his "tone." He has an all encompassing way with the guitar. Tone is just one elemet.

IMO they are very, very popular with the younger crowd (my daughter's fave band) cause they represent a bridge between/combo of two diff music styles - trad rock and something else kinda like rap...

Buddy Guy and SRV for sure.

But lately, Mato from Indigenous has a great Strat tone going on. I just saw him live and it was awesome. He sounds like Jimi and SRV when ever he wants to and then has a sound all his own.

Now I reckon it has to be.....Robert Cray.

Well, I'm 36, and probably not considered young by the younger crowd.

But you have to remember...they started in the mid 80's.

Actually, my favorite record of their's is "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan", which came out in 1988. It was also their last full-length album with Hillel Slovak on guitar. "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" runs a close second, though.

Both Hillel and John have a very obvious Hendrix influence.

Thats a long way from Minnesota!!! Sushi for less is now Sushiya, it IS in Duarte. And Santa Teresita is no longer a hospital but a medical clinic.

By the way, The Old Spaghetti Factory is still that, and is still off the 210 fwy!!!

Sushiya- yep they had just changed it right before I moved (2 years ago). AWESOME Albacore sushi!!
I have this memory of sitting in my car in the St. Teresita parking lot, listening to Jed the Fish on KROQ announcing that Curt Cobain had just died.

anyway, I still say that those two dudes in the band 'Plankton' have the best strat tones out there today!!!

Re: Who had/has the best Strat tone?

Aside from my own delightful tones, there was a Rodney Crowell spinoff in the late '90s, I believe, called the Cicadas. Brother Fezz parka turned me onto them and they have some of the best, shimmering, glassy, sweet Strat tones i've ever heard. not dirty, but it all has a little hair on it. Sounds like what a Strat is supposed to sound like, at least to me. A lot of it sounds like the middle pickup alone, or the "4" position.

I rather detest the neck pickup sound on a Strat (I am not a fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan, ok?) though curiously I love the tele neck pickup. Go fig.

But if you want to hear great, vintage-sounding, glassy Strat Tones, go to the Apple Music Store and buy "The Cicadas." It also has the advantage of being a great record with a lot of good songs and great playing on it.

I just got this CD, Matt Schofield, Siftin' Thru Ashes. It's my first time ever hearing anything by this guy, a friend just sent me the CD and said check this out. Matt can play and it's good album, it's Blues and Jazz and he has an awesome Strat tone, one of the best I have heard in a long time.

Re: Who had/has the best Strat tone?

So much has to so with the Amp you play out of. I expect you are looking for pure unadulterated Strat through 60's fender amp tone -clean and sparkly.Or you want gritty saturated Strat through '59 Bassman. If you are looking for Strat outta Marshall, then that would be , like, Tommy Bolin I guess. Don't know about Srat through triple Rect. Botique!

That would have to be Richie Blackmore, Ed King and Jeff Beck for Strat tones.

As for Bass..Jonas Reingold for sure from The Flower Kings.

Re: Who had/has the best Strat tone?

Strats are funny things. I remember hearing that you look good on the dance floor tune with Arctic Monkeys on the radio for the first time. I had no idea who they were at the time (to be honest, I don't know much more about them now) "Wow, that was one nasty sounding strat", I thought. Now, that tone has no resemblence to classic (Hendrix, SRV, Gilmour et al) Strat tones whatsoever but it is still very much recognizable.

It's just amazing how such a simple instrument can merge the familiar and the unknown.

You know, it doesn't ever seem to matter to me so much as to who is playing the Strat. What amazes me is that I can always tell that it's a Strat being played. Leo came, saw, electrified a canoe paddle, and kicked ass. And it was good.

..makes sense in my own little reality, I guess!

Lots of great players, dead and alive making great sounds with strats ,but lets face it Hendrix was the best and the tones he could pull out of one were the BEST
