John Frusciante, for his ability to just drop his pants and go for it. Seems like he sort of loses it sometimes, then the way he gets himself out of what sounds like a bad spot is better than anythiing I could do on purpose. Endless ideas and creativity from this guy.

I'd have to say Roine Stolt from The Flower Kings. He can do it all and with amazing tone and taste. I know you all are saying "who?" ROINE STOLT! Get his latest solo album "Wall Street Voodoo" or The new Flower Kings disc "Paradox Hotel."

I'd like to pick up his sense for melody.

Jimi Hendrix for the sheer emotion of it, & the flow.

Allan Holdsworth for the chord voicings & crazy vocabulary.

John Scofield for his vast fretboard mastery & crazy Donald Duck impression.

    There's a lot more.

Mostly I'd like to figure out what *I* sound like...

to see my name mentioned on a thread like this is humbling and unbelievable,ESPECIALLY by players of your caliber.I don't get it---I stumble all over myself, and get mentioned on the same page as the real players.....

I know this might be an older thread, but I've been away for awhile, and I'm playing catchup---thanks for the mention,it made my day.

Back to Armor Dildo, er Steely Dan (who I am going to see tomorrow night in Tampa) - - - - of course you know Yokohama Steely Dan was a dildo in William Burroughs' Naked Lunch...............

a few years back they had a guy on tour with them by the name of Drew Zing. Unbelieveable taste, played the old material better than Larry Carlton, Dean Parks, or any of the hired guns on the recordings. Phrasing was impeccable. Last I knew he went back to session work in NYC. I think they had a falling out with him on a personal level, because the new guy Jon Herrington doesn't even come close. You can hear his playing on the NY Rock & Soul Review and on some tracks of Alive in America..........

It may sound cliche, but I've always loved Hendrix's rhythm work on songs like Axis: Bold As Love, Little Wing, Castles Made Of Sand, etc.

    Good call!
Hendrix was a fantastic rhythm player---"The Wind Cries Mary" is superb, and the solo is very chord oriented.

To run completely counter to my own thread - The WCM solo defines what I think of for clean strat tone.

    Agreed 100%.

I wish I could harness half of the fire Jimi had on the "Power Of Soul" guitar parts (Band of Gypsys). What he does with that one note on the intro solo is sick--bending it,wrenching every last drop of music out before ending with a patented great vibrato....sigh....

Chet Atkins always had such a wonderful clear tone, especially in his Gretsch days---and what a touch.

I was always a fan of Lowell George's unique approach to slide. There are times he sounds like he's playing a sax or some other wind instrument.

Another obvious one for me is Jerry Garcia's phrasing and sheer musical
    intelligence.

I agree. It would have been cool to sit for a few hours w/a couple acoustic guitars & just pick his brain.

Eric Johnson sure has a way with chords. I'd like to develop some o them skills.

Jeff Beck ain't too shabby, either. His creativity, abandon and pure mastery of the instrument are something to strive towards.

I would be happy with SRV's raw emotion and the ability to mesmerize people with my playing the way he (and Hendrix, for that matter) did. God rest their souls.

I'd pick Knopfler and Gilmour, both of them for their phrasing and melodic sense. These guys know how to play a solo that opens a new window on the song.

    B.B. for his vibrato.

    Chet for his thumb.

George Harrison - never over plays, knew how to accent a song
Brian Setzer - speed, whacked chords (E7dim?) fun to listen to

& Moonpie has a great list of Hendrix tunes

    +1 on knopfler!!!

Been listening to EC a lot lately. His phrasing is actually quite good. Generic, but nice...

The other player I think who has pretty good phrasing, but quite sloppy, is actually Slash.

Funny you should mention Setzer. I've heard 3 versions of Sleepwalk so far. Joe Satriani, Danny Gatton, and Brian Setzer.

Honestly, Setzer slew both of them with a huge battle axe... His version rulez!!!!

Yeah, he killed the tune with that battle axe, too. It's a massacre.

There are songs that don't want warrior chops, and "Sleepwalk" is one of them. None of the guys you mention do it as well as the original.
