    Other than tone....

Name a guitarist for which you would like to pick up one aspect of their playing. Chord voicings, note choice, etc.

For me, Pete Townshend. I would love to learn how to hit some of his off-rhythms. For example, the second electric guitar on Squeeze Box, among others.

    How about you?

    Things to make them fuzzy
    Things to make them louder

JJ Cale. Master of understatement and taste. Something I clearly lack.

I think Clapton was on the JJ Cale quest for a time.

Jimmy Herring's phrasing. Sometimes he sounds like he's falling down a flight of stairs, only to land on his feet at the bottom.

Pat Metheny's ability to make every single solo a melody and not just random notes.

    Mike Stern's unbelievable bebop vocabulary.

Robben Ford's perfect blend of Jazz & Blues.

Derek Truck's other-worldly emotion in playing.

    That's a start.

    Youa re too kind, fezz.

I'm with frank... all those Steely Dan cats, but especially Larry "The Greatest" Carlton's phrasing and harmonic knowledge. The guy has a bottomless bag of tricks for defining a note's caharacter... slides and smears, hammer ons and offs, three or four different kinds of vibrato he can effortlessly control. Awesome.

Yes on the Dan hired guns like Carlton. Even band members like Becker are amazing tasteful players.

Mike Campbell has great idea that I always like.

Knopfler. of course for note choice and phrasing.

Jerry's use of passing notes/chromatic scales in a melodic way that doesn't sound "scaley..." Also, his ability to morph seamlessly between single note melodies, double-stops and chord progressions....

Well, it is a good idea to try to compose melodically as you solo. But the best rule for making music is:

I'd settle for a speck of whatever it is Mick Taylor's got...fluidity, expressiveness, the ability to bring out the best in whatever song he's playing.

I'd go with Jimmy Byant, for his picking technique. Listen to "Stratosphere Boogie" for example.

I'd like to be able to freely sing and play simultaneously.
Accompany myself, like I'm not selling either duty sort to make things work.

Like, say, James Taylor, Richard Thompson or many others.

    Very Good!
That's interesting. I tell people all the time that I'd gladly give up guitars and any meager talent I have just to be able to sing. If I had a voice like Paul Rodgers or Greg Allman....

I would second Wilko's Mike Campbell suggestion. He plays the right part every time. Quite a good surf guitar player too.

Speaking of Wilko (well, actually WILCO), I think Nels Cline plays so far beyond my comprehension that I have become very envious. He plays a whole world of guitar styles that I'll never absorb.

    Re: Other than tone....

Mike Campbell has the unique challenge and good fortune of playing on Tom Petty songs, mostly.
That's kind of an ideal breeding ground for his brand of concise genius.
He reminds me of George Harrison, in that he routinely comes up with parts that help make good songs definitive records.

    He rules.
