    an old friend is back!

i got my 78 musicmaster back on friday. i had loaned to my buddy (extended loan of course) cause i wasn't going to play it for awhile. i know it's not the greatest bass, but man is it a kick to play. it's upgraded with a Bill lawrence (250?) pup and i have flats on it. not as punchy as my ibanez, but i found it to be killer for our first set. anyways, i was too excited and had to post.

That's the bass I learned to play on, back when I was 16. I've always wanted to get one, just for sentimental reasons. "Mine" was actually the high school's bass; it had a black pickguard on a black body, and I thought it was the coolest bass ever. Sounded great through the SF Bassman 10 or whatever it was called; had 3 10" speakers, I believe.

Dang, now I've gotta tool on over to ebay to see if there are any around...
Congrats on getting it back, Chucko!

you should be able to find one. mine is black on black, but the body has turned sort of a greenish hue of black, if that is possible to fathom...

    Yeah, mine's the same, too.

I'd sell it to you, Rickenjangle, but to be honest, I'm in it a bit heavy at about $425. I've seen'em go a lot cheaper and in better condition on the bay since I got mine.

Aw, man, that red one looks sweet!

That's OK, MP, I don't have any hard-earned ducats to part with right now anyway.

Re: an old friend is back!

I got the amp, I just need the guitar now. My amp is a '72, according to the serial # and date codes on the transformers. I haven't pulled the chassis to read the pot #, yet but feel pretty confindent of dating it correctly. Plus its got the 6AQ5A (JAN 6005) tubes in the power amp section, and a Mullard 12AX7A/ECC83 for a preamp. The later ones had 6v6s for power tubes. Original speaker was gone, replaced with a Peavey Scopion, which I replaced with a Weber Blue Dog ceramic, undoped speaker.

Great amp for guitar, dunno about bass, though

Yup, i got one too. Flipp-flopped the "new" Vibro Champ chassis into the MM cab & vice versa. Getting great big 3D clean sounds from the VC chassis thru a classy 12 " antique low power alnico in that MM cab (a perfect fit for Champ chassis BTW), whilst the MM chassis (modded) is punishing a 10" stuffed into the VC cab...

oh, really? Now that sounds very interesting. I did not know the chassis were interchangable. Just the Vibro Champs, though?

Figues, there were two VCs at the local GC until a couple of weeks ago, and a small shop had one until about the same time. I love champs, and always want to play them with a bigger speaker.

The real secret (sshhhhhhh) is that if you are good with a skill saw, the MM cab will actually accept a 15" speaker. It never ends...

you don't say? Wouldn't the baffle be essentially in two pieces by the time you are done? I've thought about that, and I happen to have a JBL D130F hanging around....
